1st AMERICAN INDIAN GAY PRIDE WEEKEND
JULY 6,7, 8, 2012
TURTLE MOUNTAIN CHIPPEWA RESERVATION
BELCOURT, ND, USA
The Founders Committee of the 2012 GayNations CAMP event is pleased to announce the first annual Geographical Center of North America Gay Pride Weekend scheduled for July 6,7,8, 2012 on the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Indian reservation, Belcourt, ND, USA.
The event is an international celebration of gay, lesbian, transgender life and focuses on building healthy identities among a high-risk group of adults and youth who are in need of positive identity-building community events. The event is all-inclusive of people of color and everyone else who wishes to participate in a retro-like Camping weekend. It will become a snapshot of gay life in the middle of Turtle Island.
Unlike larger Gay Pride events, the event will focus on a simple gathering, pitching tents in and around a community park, living in recreational vehicles, walking, playing, and sporting, with a community picnic, charades, movie night and an adult dance. The event is intended to mirror teepees on the plains, or the occupy movement.
It will also heavily rely upon American Indian dance and music and will feature a community round-dance rather than a parade as well as karaoke. There will be some speeches and the honoring of courageous American or Canadian native peoples in the fight for equality and recognition in both countries. Randy Burns, Pacifica CA, of the Pyramid Lake Paiute tribe and a former 2005/2010 San Francisco Gay Pride Grand Marshall has consented to be this year’s 2012 CAMP Grand Marshall.
The event is not intended to be political or focused on individual organizations with a defined social message. Speakers will be invited to give informal talks on identity, healthy living, sports activities and coming out to your family and community in a positive way.
The event will also include softball, volleyball, badminton, yoga and other healthy group physical activities.
The event is drug-free and alcohol free within the campsite . Drinking age requirements will be enforced elsewhere. Driving during the event is discouraged. Bicycles are highly encouraged.
A website outlining some of the preliminary events is planned for 2012gaynations.com 12 P.M. and on, Veterans Park, Belcourt, ND, USA, Hospital Road |
