2012 World Jr Hockey Championships

Team Canada's World Junior camp gets underway today with Wheat Kings' Mark Stone and Michael Ferland of course playing for a spot on the team.

The site at the link below is live blogging from camp and it looks like each WK is on opposite teams to start camp with Stone playing for "Team Red" on a line with Winnipeg Jet draft pick Mark Scheiffele and Tanner Pearason. Ferland is matched with Vancouver Giants' Brandon Gallagher and Prince Albert Raiders' Mark McNeill for "Team White"

The live blog is at:
http://futureconsiderations.ca/

The first intrasquad game goes tonight at 9:00 and it looks like you can watch it free at http://www.fasthockey.com (just have to register for an account)

It would be great if we could use this thread to share our thoughts and reaction as camp plays out

Day 1

Not sure if anyone watched the online stream, but it looks like Ferland scored in Team White's 3-2 win.

The guy with the blog in the link above says on Ferland that "though he scored a goal, Michael Ferland just didn’t do enough without Mark Stone."
Looks like in at least the eyes of some he's going to have to fight through the common hockey label that he's piggy backing on another player's success. I'm not sure I'd agree with that having seen the way his game has come around and with him not even playing the whole year on the same line.

By some of the accounts from hard cores on HFBoards.com, it sounds like Stone didn't necessarily stand out in this particular game but many on the same board are picking him to make the team.

Also a real nice story on Ferland here:

Day 2

Line mixup for day 2. Stone and Scheifele get a new winger in Phil Di Giuseppe. Ferland plays with Max Reinheirt as well as Brett Connolly of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Sounds like it was a much better day for Stone in a Team Red 2-0 win. Scored a goal and sounded like he was an impact player... being "dangerous in the offensive end, with and without the puck"

Ferland didn't have a mention of note.

Cuts will have just been made. No word yet, hopefully Future Considerations is wrong in speculating that Ferland might be one of them:

Ferland

According to TSN, Ferland was in fact cut:
http://tsn.ca/chl/story/?id=382625

Sorry to hear this. Likely little consolation right now, but his stock is definitely on the rise.

Final cuts are Wednesday morning when we'll find out if Stone makes the team.

Ferland

Let's give Ferland a good applause to welcome him back to Brandon tonight! I'm hoping he'll be in the lineup...

Stone

Stone scratched for tonights game, which at this stage is normally a strong indication that a player will make the team unless there is an injury. The thought amongst many on hfboardsis that he will be a top 6 forward

I sure hope Stone makes the team! It has been WAY too long since a WK was on the World Junior roster.

Have you forgotten about a certain guy named Brayden Schenn last year who just completely dominated the tournament while playing with a separated shoulder who was a Wheat King at the time he played for Canada?

Stone

And Stone is in!
Even without some of the NHL junior-aged players, looks like a decent forward group. Surprised that Ryan Murphy and Ty Rattie didn't make it, but I didn't see a second of camp. Have to think that Rattie will pull away in the WHL scoring race now. Little concerned about goaltending. I know Visentin has the experience but doesn't look to be having all that good of a year.

Stone

Stone scores to give Canada a 2-1 lead... Broadcasters singing his praises. Interesting story about Stone's dad being a reporter at the Sioux St Marie newspaper whose job Bob MacKenzie ended up filling

yeah...no pierre

watching game, nice start. even more pleasing is pierre NOT doing the colour for TSN, didn't like him at all. the kids seem to do nothing right when he did the colour. very refreshing this year. IMO.

Star of the Tourney....and hat trick in hand.

This will be the giant leap for Stone to become the household name of this years tournament.

Mark is such an intellegent player. So lets enjoy watching him in Brandon this year, because next year he will be a pro......oh and I just watched him get his hat trick goal.

Stoner is lighting it up good for him and good for the Wheat Kings. I wouldn't bet on seeing him for the whole season as a Wheat King tough - he might be bringing in some good prospects if a contender is shopping for a scorer ..... just saying ......

Well, I was going to ask what the heck we're supposed to do for a drinking game during the juniors this year, but I guess we can swap it out for the "Stone scores again - take a shot" game! :-)

There is no clear #1 team this year and the WK are in the hunt. They have plenty of young players so trading for prospects makes no sense. They our a #2 centerman away from being great. Also
anderson and Boes are great when giving a chance to play instead of rotating
