Not water proof?

So I had the battery replaced in my Nike watch. The clerk at the jewelry store told me that no w I have to have the watch re coated because it is no longer water proof.
I thought tat maybe this was a way to make more money, said no thanks and left.
Now I am unsure, does anyone know if this is true? There is only one Nike store and it is in Winnipeg, yikes!
