Hospital stay after birth

How long did you stay in the hospital with your second baby. I was in the hospital for 5days with my first because she had medical complications, so I am wanting to find out what the typical stay length is so I can make plans for where my daughter will stay while we are in the hospital.

I have been in for as little as 6 hours (uncomplicated, with a midwife) up to 48 hours (uncomplicated with an OB, complicated with a midwife).

You stay depends many factors!
Make your wishes know to your doctor before hand!
Make your nurses know your wishes when you are in labour.
Do you feel confident? Are you fairly well rested? Was there any trauma for you or your newborn? Does your newborn have any medical problems? Do you have enough help at home for you, your newborn and your older child?
second babies generally go home much sooner provided they are healthy.

I've had friends who were in and out on the same day and others who spent a whole week in the hospital due to having a more complicated birth. Really depends on the situation, I don't think there is a typical length as every single situation is so different.

My last baby was in 2013. I had baby at noon and asked to go home that night. They told me I couldn't go home until the newborn screening heel scrape had been completed. It was finally done around noon the next day I think, then they told me I couldn't leave til the results were in. I didn't end up leaving til 4ish.

Typically they keep you until baby has their screenings done, which can't be done till baby is 24 hours old. Usually results are in within the hour.
With my first I had complications and was in for 6 days. With all my others I was just in for the 24 hours till screenings were done. I myself was discharged by my OB before the 24 hours, but just stuck around in the hospital till screenings were done and they could release baby.

usually its 24 hours. but in some cases its more... I was in for 48 because i was unable to get two bags of antibiotics for Group Strep B and then there was a wee bit of meconium that followed my girl out...

Baby 1 - 3 days. She's was 8 weeks early came out healthy but HSC has a policy any baby under 39 weeks stays for 3 days regardless
Baby 2 - I had her at 7 am and that night Dr said baby was good to go. My bp was a bit so I was there for 48 hours
All depends
Good luck.

I ended up having an emergency csection and I was in the hospital for 4 days and I was begging to leave.

Depends on delivery

Depends on your delivery and how the nurses and doctors think you are doing. My son was ready to go home but i wasn't in shape to so we stayed for 3 days

Three days with my son

I had him Saturday afternoon and we were kept until late Monday afternoon because we had him circumcised Monday morning. As soon as he was cleared from that we were sent home.
It may also depend on how busy they are. I have head people sent home the same day if there are no complications and baby had a good APGAR. My son and I could have gone home Sunday, but they were empty that weekend so they let us stay. We were comfy...
Of course I had my daughter in Calgary and I was begging to go home within 12 hours. I was stuck in a room with a screaming baby and a mum who had a C section so the nurses were constantly coming in and out. Could not get any rest.
The single rooms here in Brandon are such a blessing.....
Good luck!!

Wished I'd stayed longer

I wish I would have stayed a little longer but I wasn't getting the rest I knew I was going to need in the noisy hospital.
I'd recommend setting up a baby sitter that can come on short notice and watch existing kids during the day if at all possible.

Stayed about 3 days they wanted me to stay the weekend but I was ready to go home I couldn't sleep. Thinking back now I figured out the reasons y they wanted me to stay. Wish they would have voiced their concerns and I would have stayed longer. Think second babies u get out quicker
