New Police Station Bids

I'm all for a new police station in Brandon as I had the opportunity for a tour of their current facility and anyone can see it is no longer adequate. But I do have a problem with the proposed $13 Million price tag, not because it is to much to spend, but because I feel it is to much to spend on renovating a building. I find it completely ridiculous that the fire hall, which is brand new, is budgeted for $11 million but to refurbish an old building is more money. And I can't help but ask, what are the maintenance costs going to be only a few years down the road compared to building new? Is it really worth it to spend this kind of money on a building that was left in favor of a new one by Safeway? And I know its a little late now, but did the city look at the model Manitoba Hydro created when they built their new office in Winnipeg? Hydro recycled about 95% of all the buildings they demolished, cut thier costs of demo in half, and that stage was completed 6 months ahead of schedule compared to demo.

I don't expect this will change anything, and was really just interested in some other views as I find you get a clearer picture with other's input.

Paul Crane's

letter to the editor (Brandon Sun) the other day basically says the same thing. It is cheaper to build from scratch. As much as I like to reuse what we can, I think the situation should be revisited with the demo as an option considering all received bids were well over the $13,000,000.00 budgeted.

Well now...

And here I thought that the new firehall would be mayor Burgess and councill's only "white elephant" in the city.

I guess we were wrong. The next municipal election can't come fast enough...

Save the heritage building?

Maybe council thinks that the old Safeway building is a Heritage building that needs preservation. Or possibly a nephew has a renovation firm not a construction firm.
