| | | Traffic control in Brandon | | |
Yesterday it took 1 hour to cross Brandon from Highway number 1 to Rosser using 18th St because 1st Street South was closed. I think if police where controlling the Beau crest and 18th St Intersection it may have helped out.
City needs to address 18th Street traffic problems after flood concerns have passed because 18th was bad before the flooding.

You must not live in Brandon. The only reason that there is any kind of traffic congestion is the fact that the sand bags are still being protected. I would assume that they had first street blocked off was because they are disassembling the dykes to begin fixing the traffic issues on first and 18th streets. It will probably take a week or two to get traffic back to normal but its only because they're fixing the traffic issues. It'll get worse before it gets better I'm sure. |

drive much in the city do you?
because you are not paying attention
or perhaps never drive those streets at the critical times.
yes it is bad now with the those sand bags but it was bad before as well especially during peak times. |

If its that backed up that it takes an hour to travel a couple KM, why not take hwy 1 to the 468, go south to the 457 then drive west and take the bypass hwy 110 which connects to Victoria, and Richmond. It also completely bypasses the city. |

Compared to the pre-twin-bridge era, getting through 18th is a ton better (or at least will once again be better after all of the sandbags are gone and the Southbound lane has both lanes open again all the way through).
I'm sure traffic control is an ever-evolving work in progress that forces the powers that be to make at times difficult decisions, but two points for change IMO would be:
- Daly overpass re-do to be two lanes each way. Would mainly be for the sake of Northbound traffic that could use the extra lane. Don't expect this in the short term, we just had a big bridge spend.
- Lights at 18th and Braecrest. This won't improve 18th and might even slow it just slightly, but somebody is going to be seriously hurt turning left off of Braecrest onto 18th during busier hours of the day. It's at the point where you can turn right on 18th, take the nearest U-turn into the Southbound lane and sometimes come out ahead of the game. Timing could be such that 18th gets priority, but this situation is only going to get worse with more condos going up on Braecrest soon, more people travelling to and from ACC that live in the West part of the City, etc. |

The city needs to review all of the traffic lights in the city. Some have some erratic operation (i.e. no green after a turn signal for some time) or are just sequenced terribly.
Traffic flow or lack of it on 18th Street is embarrasing for the amount of vehicles that use it, especially from the University past the Corral Centre.
There is no reason it should take more than fifteen minutes to cross a city of this size under normal conditions.

I travel from the west end to the Corral Center several times a day, and often travel further north up 18th. I've never had a trip of more than 15 minutes, even from Windsor Plywood. Some suggestions:
1. Where the road is two lanes, use both. The congestion on northbound 18th coming up to Rosser is ridiculous. Everyone getting into one lane at Van Horne in anticipation of the single lane a kilometer ahead slows traffic down to the rate of the slowest car. Merging in (not cutting off) is perfectly legal, as long as you signal.
2. Same goes for northbound between the bridges and past the Corral Center: sure, 18th becomes a single lane each way at the top of the hill, but there's no need to have single lane (left lane) traffic all the way.
3. I've noticed Brandon traffic doesn't do a great job of "filling the gaps" -- often, when the light changes, enormous gaps appear between cars. If only three cars get through a light instead of six or eight, traffic is more likely to back up. I'm not suggesting tailgating, just being a little more attentive.
