Accelrating to 70km in Rivers.

Accelerating to 70km/hr on highway 24 just outside of Rivers. Was stopped by the Rivers police about a hundred feet from the 70km/hr posted sign. I was given a speeding ticket for $266.75 for doing 67km/hr in a 50km/hr, not quite a hundred feet from the 70km/hr sign. Has this happened to anyone else that either lives in Rivers or was passing through? Should I fight the ticket?

i have been stopped for similar things, luckily i didn't get a ticket, just a warning, i'm not sure if there is anything to fight though as its not 70 until the sign but maybe you might get the ticket reduced?

Ya I've heard of a few people getting stopped there for that. A friend of mine got stopped for doing 57 just before the 70 sign but never got a ticket.

"doing 67km/hr in a 50km/hr"

not exactly accelerating.

Don't speed and if you do, pay.

Sorry

to hear of your misfortune but anyone who frequently passes through Rivers has a pretty good idea to watch there speeds closely. Any stories I have heard they are seldom forgiving.

If anyone does not know that, take this is your warning. Small town policing relies on tickets to subsidize there being.

I am not saying they are wrong in what they do, just do your part to AVOID getting a ticket.

fight - how you are guilty

You were not in the 70 km zone. How on earth would you fight it. Would you say, well I was almost not breaking the law.

There are several other places.

Just south of sportsman park there is a short stretch that changes from 90kmh to 50kmh then up to 70kms. ( at least it was 15 years ago)

Just west of Brandon on 1A is also scary if you try to cross the pedestrian crossing south of Fotheringham ,

So yes, there is a reason why people get tickets at these locations.
Hope people learn to wait for the posted sign before they think they on to open highway when they actually in town.

Until you pass the sign saying 70, any speed above the previous limit is speeding. Not a big surprise that you got stopped.

nope dont fight

you are in the wrong, the 70 zone starts at the sign.

also the fact that you think you may have a fighting chance i found a link that can clear things up for you.

West side?

If you are talking the west side of Rivers I think the 70 sign needs to be moved further west and the 50 zone should be extended!!
I think that 70 zone was probably created before that development went in and I can't believe it is 70 in what seems like a residential zone. The 70 zone starts when you are still going by people's back yards.

And to answer your question. No. You should not fight it. Nothing to fight. You were doing 67 in a 50. Like a previous post said. What would you say? "I was almost not breaking the law"

So

If he stopped you a 100 feet prior to the sign then it must have took you some time to pull over hence he must have got you even further into the 50 zone. In any event what do you think would be the correct distance for him to give you a ticket prior to the sign 100-200-300 feet ect.. The 70 doesn't start till you pass it so suck it up and learn from this. Don't waste the courts time.

Plead guilty and tell your story to the JP and see if it can be reduced. Tell them you could see the 70 sign and had begun to accelerate. Unfortunately you will also loose merits and your insurance will go up.

tough luck

Good luck trying to fight your ticket. You were still in the 50 km per hour by only 100 feet. The bad part about it is a lot of people do the same thing just before the speed limit goes up. They either don't admit to it or never got pulled over by the police.

lol I like to stay at 70kph and not accelerate till I hit the 100 sign heading out of brandon. It peeves off all the SUV & oil truck drivers behind me. :p

rivers

cops will give anyone tickets for anything. If you don't want tickets then do not speed up until after the signs, cross double lines to park on other side of street, ect. They give out a lot of tickets at that stretch of hwy, it is good for business.

they need to...

have a buffer zone in these areas. If people do go the lower speed right to the sign they get dangerously passed by every car behind them. Same situation just outside of forest. See what happens when you go 70 right to the 100 sign there, it becomes a very dangerous situation as 5 vehicles at once try to pass on a busy highway.

It's dangerous because of the speeders, not the people driving the limit. Also, there are always impatient people passing dangerously.

You were doing 67. The posted limit is 50. Just because the sign was coming up, doesn't mean that you shouldn't get the ticket.

the

speed limit does not change until you reach the sign.

many years ago now when i lived out west a friend who was having pretty bad financial issues had managed to get a cleaning job. still barely scraping by she had let her license lapse for several months. the place she worked for she would have to drive just outside of town to pick up her cleaning supplies, vacuum, etc, go to her cleaning locations and then return the stuff. well the road out to where the cleaning place was was pretty much a country road with darn near nothing on it and the road went 50 up til a bridge before it finally went up to 100. NOBODY went 50 down this road lol. low and behold i get a panicked phone call one day that can i go pick up her kids after school cuz she thought she was going to jail and never getting out lol. she was caught going just over 100 right before the 100 sign and of course then she had no license. the cop let her sweat it out for a bit i guess he darn near threatened her with everything in the book. the fact that she was going technically over 2x the speed limit i guess he said he could put her in jail. she luckily(?) got off very easily. after she pretty much had a psychotic breakdown on the side of the road he told her he'd drop the ticket to 80 in a 50 and i can't remember what was done about her license, i know she had it paid again pretty quick. she also had to have her vehicle towed i think.

does this make you feel any better?

When the speed limit is reduced...

There is always a sign ahead of time to warn of a lowered change in speed. Tap on the brakes at that exact point and your vehicle will be at the new posted limit by the time you reach the lowered speed limit.

Rivers Cop is the worst. They like to pull people over for no reason, especially if they have not seen the car in town before.

Always a robocop in ever town though..

You are still in the 50 km/h zone until you pass the sign that states 70 km/h. The cop had every right to ticket you.

Interesting

Isn't it funny that the only ones who complain about the police actually doing their jobs are the ones getting caught breaking the law.

For those of you who have a problem with the police doing what they are paid to do - why don't you post a list of the laws that you think the police should enforce and a list of the ones you think they should ignore - you know, just for future reference?

OP - you openly admit that you were speeding - I would like to hear your reasons for thinking that you shouldn't have gotten a ticket or exactly what your strategy would be for fighting the ticket.

Since he's parked there so often, I'm guessing it's a problem area?
And if you speed up early, do people really need to sae those 2 seconds?
