| | | How did you quit smoking? | | |
I'm trying to quit, it has proven challenging. If you've never been a smoker who actually quit smoking then I dont need your 'opinion'.
I am asking simply this:
how did you quit smoking?
(Telling me how bad it is for me is a waste of your time I already know that. I want to know from people with real experience what they did to kick the habit!) |

| | | It was hard.... | | |
But I used the patch almost 12 years ago. The first day was really tough - but I kept at it and beat the evil weed.
I ate LOTS of pistachios as well...
Oh, I should add that no-one wanted to be around me for the first few weeks, except my dogs - just a heads up, lol.

I am one of those fortunate ones who can quit easily...However my mother was a 2-3 packs a day smoker,,,Yes that's right,,,2-3 packs a day and is now down to 2-3 smokes a day as she's on champex and she's been smoking for 30+ years...If she can do ,,,,HONESTLY anyone can...Good luck....and if you want to quit you can do it..Just keep telling yourself that, most of it is your head playing games with you....Best of luck, you can do it...oh yeah, make sure you have a good support group around you as well...It makes a huge difference...I call my mother daily and tell her what a great job she's doing.. |

No-one who knew me thought I could quit. I was a 2 1/2 pack a day after almost 33 years... Haven't had the urge to go back in years...
I even smoked one not too long ago to prove a point to someone... YUCK!!!!!
I guess I should add that I (and my ex) picked a date in advance and kept looking at Q-Day on the calendar to imprint it better. The night before Q-Day I threw out all the ash-trays, lighters and cigarettes in the house. I caught my ex with a pack the next morning and those went down the toilet, lol.
P.S. She couldn't quit. Edited by ChrisV, 2012-06-15 17:12:50 |

sun flower seeds are great for some people. when I quit I cut down gradually. and once i was at about 3 to 4 smokes a day I quit cold turkey. Oh it was hard at first but it got easier.
my boyfriend still smokes but hes been doing the sun flower seed thing and for the most part he's done pretty well but I don't think he's quite commited himself yet.
i didn't try it but i've heard if you chew gum lots that the thrive gum really helps cut down cravings. they also make hard candies to if your not a big gum chewer. |

I quit cold turkey when I had a stroke , caused by cigarettes btw !! , No other reason, no high BP, cholesterol, etc. Smoking did it!!
Sorry, I know you know!!
I did it COLD TURKEY except , I found that I carried a small bottle{travel size} of Scope, etc. in my pocket & when I wanted a smoke, I swished & spit & that helped take my mind off it, Plus helped the breath too lol |

been 3 years since my last smoke. I used
champix for around 2 months. You are allowed to smoke while taking champix, but within the first week I found out I wasn't getting the "buzz" out of my smoke becouse of the champix blocking the need for nicotine. So at that point I quit.
Not all people can use champix, some get some pretty funky thoughts. |

I really wanted to quit....saying and doing are totally different. I quit cold turkey. After the first two weeks it got easier. I stopped having any cravings around the 6 month mark. Apparently i wasn't too great to be around in the first couple weeks....
Good luck! |

| | | Cold turkey | | |
I just stopped. I changed the way I thought and everyone I had a craving I would change activity, drink water, talk about it - whatever I had to do NOT to smoke. Once you decide that lighting up is no longer an option, it stops being about quitting and starts to just be about craving management and gradually the cravings disappear all together.
Been smoke free over 5 years now. |

...cold turkey is the way to go. If you can, don't waste your money on nicorette, etc., why put other additives in your body? Its mind over matter and a lifestyle change. I am a former smoker, quit in 1996 and never thought about it since. Plus my son and husband would lose respect for me too...good luck!

it was great. there is a diet involved with the treatment as well. i haven't even held a cigarette in 6 years and I smoked two packs a day. i was ready to quit and had tried a number of other methods. some medical plans with cover some or all of the treatments. i went for a month and it cost about $400 all said and done. less than what i would have spent on cigs in a month. good luck! |

A friend of mine now gets up in the morning and insteaad of saying I won't smoke or I am quitting, she says "I choose not to smoke today." |

| | | The patch.... | | |
.....is what got me through quitting quitting. I had tried several times in the past and the last thee attempts saw me going a year or more without a cigarette. Then for one reason or another I would get stupid and think "only one. What could it hurt?" and would in short orde be smoking again.
I finally got sick of quitting and now have been smoke free for over 6 years.
Funny thing is, ice cream will still cause me to crave a cigarette. Needless to say I have all but given up ice cream as well. |

I just quit. Cold turkey. It has been almost 10 months, and I've not had many cravings. My hubby quit 4 months ago, we used the mid strength patch for one week and nothing after that.
Good luck to you. You could also check out the Manitoba Quits website. The contest they had going is over, but there is a lot of information there! :D |

I wanted to quit for forever and the first week was difficult. Once I adjusted my goal to stay quit until my next urge, things became more manageable. Good luck. Quiting is worth the effort. |

| | | Lots of things helped | | |
It was the CONTROL issue for me though. I was so PO'd that something so small could have so much control over my actions, my schedule. Everything always revolved around smoking or more precise when I could have that next cigarette. I took back the control.
Had to change things. Had to avoid smokers. Some friends understood. Other didn't.
Oh and....I thought I was definitely a non-smoker for life when I quit for 10 years. Wrong. I've now quit AGAIN for 3 years.
