Hearing a rumour this evening that someone from the area has won $250,000 as part of the big lottery this weekend. Is there anyone out there with more info? Edited by Adam, 2012-07-08 00:26:24 |

I would hope that everyone could give that person privacy. I know if it was me I wouldn't want to be posted about if I won money. It is their business. |

No privacy when you win a lottery. They can plaster your name all over the place. Its what you sign up for when you buy a ticket. |

part of winning the lotteries in almost all of Canada requires that they can use your name AND picture as proof that someone wins and for advertising purposes. As I believe only Quebec gives the right to not disclose who the winner is. Not saying I agree with it as puts a face on winnings but also a possible target on the winners and their families for those who would like to separate these people from at least a part of their winnings. |

It is unfortunate that there can be a double edged sword to winning. I knew a lady from the Philippines who told me that she would worry if she won big as it could put her family back home in danger. (Yes, they will kidnap your family back there!) I do realize that your name and photo get posted. |

Well I know it wasn't me, all I got was a free play, pfft. And by the sounds of it, wasn't any of our tickets in our group play at work either, I don't think those get checked until Monday. *le sigh* |

a life-changing amount for some people (would be for me), plus you don't have the hassle of such a huge win (50 mil). |

I didn't say anything of the sort. I think people on here read something and obviously don't have very good comprehension. I made my original comment about respecting a person's privacy - yes, the lottery corporation have the right to print your name and photo. People gossiping on a blog is not quite the same thing.

to win something like that but I'm sort of with traveller on the amount, by the time most people paid of their bills the remaining amount is sort of petty, now it would be a different story if we had interest rates up in the 10 percent range, one could leave the principal alone and have 25 grand, minus taxes, as mad money. |

Everyone has a choice, you either buy a ticket or you do not. You have to know the rules prior to purchasing your ticket and pleading ignorance is not acceptable especially when it is printed on the ticket, "...and has the right to publish the name, city or town, of residence and recent photograph of a prize winner".
People do stupid things here too so it is not just the Philippines. |

It sounds like it went to someone who will appreciate it. I say Good For Her!
We saw a guy on TV years ago who had won a million, and he wasn't even excited. He already had a few million in the bank. I guess it's never enough for some people. |

it is a small amount but depending on where you are at in your life it could be a nice chunk to have fun with. 250 g's would allow us to pay of ALL of our bills and still have well over 200 g's to have fun with.
congrats to the winner! |

Other thing to keep in mind is how much you'd have to actually make to have 250k in your pocket. Lottery winnings are tax exempt, so to come away with 250 in one year you'd normally have to earn about $435k (!!!) before taxes Edited by Adam, 2012-07-08 12:25:29 |

don't get me wrong it takes a bit of work to get $250 but unless the family is on the brink of retirement you can't retire and travel the world or help family and friends with it except for maybe one nice trip or something
or if you were just starting out it certainly would help imagine the start it would give you mortgage free/near (or help anytime if your good with your cash)
either way i'm happy for her, whoever it is, no matter where she is in her life or what it helps her accomplish |

| | | I`ll take $250,000.00 | | |
I would take it and be quite happy with it, kinda funny how everyone grumbles about all the poor wages available in Brandon but at the same time consider $250,000.00 tax free to be chump change. Anyone that says that amount of money wouldn`t change anything is either lying, jealous or just downright silly. It would pay off mortgage, pay for secondary education for a number of kids, build a brand new house in many smaller communities or replace vehicles and on and on. The amount of things I could do with it and how it could make my and my families life easier are many. |

wouldnt be happy with 250,000 is ridiculous. That is a very large amount of money and would definetly help ANY person out. People who wouldnt be happy with that dont deserve to win it.
Sounds like the person who won it, is very happy with it, and I am so happy for that person!
I know 250,00 would of helped me out. Pay off the house and a couple bills and we would still have money left over! |

I wish I was rich so I could say $250, 000 wouldn't make much difference to me. It would make a monumental difference in my life, and I'm not "starting out". Most people I know would say the same. |

If we had interest rates up in the 10 percent range, we'd have borrowing rates even higher so one would not be any further ahead. " |
|
|
But what would you need to borrow for if you won $250,000? Pay off the remainder of your mortgage and put the rest in an interest baring account. It seems like your suggesting that one needs to go into debt in order to live life....how is that so?
" |
|
|
The point is that you missed was don brown posted interest rates of 10 percent range...the point is if interest rates (the interest the bank PAYS you for having your money in the bank) if the interest rates were at 10 percent then the cost to borrow (borrowing rates) would be higher than the 10 percent the bank is paying you to keep your money in their financial institution.
Example - 150,000 mortgage @ 5%, monthly, amortized at 20 years, locked in for 5 years = $985.69, but if the cost to borrow was at 15%, the payment would then be $1925.68.
Point is, if interest paid by the bank is higher then so is the cost of borrowing so you are no further ahead with today's current interest rates.
I did not suggest anyone had to go into debt. Don't read anything into this post.
Yes, Adam is correct, the 250 grand is tax free but the interest earned is not. Edited by Amused, 2012-07-08 15:26:20 |
