7 % retail sales tax

What a nice surprise in the mail today ! My home insurance has informed me that the Gouvernment of Manitoba has implemented a 7% retail sales tax on top of my premium. So not only did we get a ridiculouse property tax hike from the city , now on top of the never ending overinflated premiums year after year on house insurance it'll cost 7% more just like that !

Totally agree! I did not vote NDP in the provincial election, and I will remember these tax hikes when we go back to the polls. I hope others will too!

$170 per month is out to lunch! That works out to over $2000/annum. National average, is $840/year, which is high.

If you are paying that much you are being gouged, or you live on a multi building farm?

Well I am liking my $40 a month payment now. I really hope that the next election Winnipeg wants change. We cannot do anything without Winnipeg on board.

The Feds want HST across the country. Look at the carrot that they put out for BC to bite....a $1.6 Billion incentive package.

It is already in place in half the country, and PEI is next.

Not just government

In addition to the 7% tax, there was a 100% increase in the deductible for hail or wind damage.

That makes no sense. How can they tax a savings plan?

NDP vs. PC finances

Yes, our NDP government has done a poor job with its finances.

But wait, the PC government in Alberta is running a deficit also. And that is with huge amounts of resource revenue. How is it possible that a non-NDP, resource rich, business friendly government could run a deficit ?

Let's not allow our bias to cloud our thinking to reduce everything to NDP-bad, PC-good.

Well I just did a tax calculation on income tax rates and I pay double what Alberta would have charged me for making the same income. Plus what did the not paying for health care add to the bill for Alberta?
Provincial taxes:
Ab: 10%
Mb:10.8% on the first $31,000+
12.75% on the next $36,000+
17.4% on the amount over $67,000

Plus didn't Alberta already pay off their debt? Manitoba is so far in the hole I cannot see daylight for this province without some sort of bailout.

Wow, FishinGuy

This would suggest that your taxable income is over $300 000.

Good for you.

We still need to understand that NDP does not automatically mean bad, and PC does not automatically mean good. Regardless of the debt situation, Alberta is still running a deficit and, as a result of last year's deficit, does indeed have a provincial debt. Yes, it is much smaller than Manitoba's but it does exist.

tax hike

Just read in today's Brandon sun that the federal government has committed 527 million dollars to Afghanistan to help rebuild the country. So we go war on terrorism and we give that country 527 million.Yes give it is not a loan.what a joke, our own people are struggling and lets raise taxes and give hundreds of millions to foreign countries that are corrupt, and war torn and our government cant fix our roads, housing, unemployment, crime and poverty, again what a joke.I say we should be more like Sweden,Iceland,Norway, etc.they look after their own people and stay out of foreign country's affairs.just my opinion.

well

maybe the NDP should be like the PC and just say you are just going to keep on working for a few more years like with the pensions. Either taxes go up and or services go down. AND BY THE WAY I HATE TAXES. When government cut taxes they cut service and add service fees. Like the feds shutting down the federal building in Brandon so we can just go to Winnipeg for any thing that you might need from there.....AND we are going to pay up to $6,000,000,000.00 in severance money to federal civil servants who are NOT losing their jobs, where do you think they are going to find that money??

you cannot compare Albertas deficit to Manitobas. Alls that means is they are pumping a whack load of money back into the province, do you not think they can't cut back and re-gain those expenses, I sure do. Manitoba is dying a very slow death.
