The border

at Boissevain will not hassle you over groceries though. Just stay under your cheese limit. My daughter does the occasional day trip and never a problem!

Groceries...

If you are not staying the night you can still bring groceries back, but I agree with the Boissevain border. They are the best ones to cross if you are only staying the day. Just make sure you dont hit your limits, and that you only bring back groceries.

Although i bring back some pop and some junk, and they never say anything.

What is the limit for cheese? The info that I found on the customs website mentioned (I think) $20 and also said 20kg. Since cheese costs considerably more than $1/kg I wasn't sure what they meant.

I believe it's $20 but cheese is soooo much cheaper down there so you can get quite a bit for $20.

I don't think

they really hassle you for groceries (like others said)

In regards to alcohol, etc., I bring some back knowing full well that I will get dinged at the border BUT I only bring stuff back that we cannot get in Canada anyway and if we could we'd probably have to pay that price for it anyway.

PS: in regards to cheese I know someone who used to load up on cheese down there until she found out the steroid and hormone levels in the american cheese, she was mortified when she realized that was what she was stocking up on and feeding to her family. Not sure of the levels compared to Canada but something to maybe look into.

We have shopped down there for years...

There are limits on milk, eggs, cheese and meat. We have not paid any duty on anything for years. They could charge you some though if they want. The thing to watch for is clothing. If it's not made in a free trade country, they could charge duty however we have not paid any for a very long time. It is good to note that China is considered a preferential trading partner with Canada so if it's made there, and so much is now, there is no duty. Basicly what they do is look at your receipts and if something is taxable in North Dakota you will get charged GST and PST the same as if you bought it in Manitoba. Their rules as to what is taxable are basicly the same as ours. Be honest and declare everything and don't forget to apply to get the North Dakota tax back.
