I really enjoy rollerblading and have been away from it for a while. So I am a bit rusty..
Two things. Good place to skate and anyone looking for a partner to skate with.

I'd love to go rollerblading. I got roller blades last summer and haven't gone in fear of making a fool of myself! |

Haven't made it out much this year, but when I do the newer the pavement the better. It wasn't long ago that they re-did the path along 34th st so would recommend it. If you want to find out what kind of shape you're in, the path along 18th St N from Kirkcaldy to the top of the hill is in decent shape. If you're still standing when you make it to the top, props to you :) |

I bike that stretch quite often. It is a tough haul for sure. Never thuoght to roller blade that. Wonder if that would be easier or harder then the bike. This weeks challenge! Dont think I will skate down it though..LOL |

Managed to make it out for a good skate today.
To expand on the 34th st comment, the path all the way from just South of the Richmond traffic circle all the way North along 34th to Pacific, then down Pacific to 26th, is in excellent shape except for a few bumps near the Willowdale traffic circle. Just keep an eye open for cars coming from the East at certain intersections where the stop sign is past the path where you'll run into the odd car that doesn't see you coming. If you did this whole stretch there and back, it would work out to a good solid 7-8km.
The path from the Richmond traffic circle going East along Richmond toward 26th is a different story. Its still usable but very rough pavement and quite a few cracks that make it not very rollerblade-friendly. It gets a little better once you hit 26th st and head South toward Maryland but still pretty rough on the wheels. Once you turn down Maryland you hit a stretch that at times has literally a forest of weeds growing through the cracks but its still quite usable. Overall wouldn't recommend this stretch because of the missing link at 21st St that means you have to go for a few blocks right on Maryland (no sidewalk or useable shoulder) and cross a not-so-pedestrian-friendly intersection to hook up with the next section of path on the South side of the cemetery. We're really lucky to have the path system we have and not that it isn't do-able, but would be great if the powers that be could find a way to either expand the shoulder or fit some sort of path in to make the connection.
Cloudy: For wheels, unfortunately rollerblading's not as popular as it used to be so its going to be a little harder to find stuff. You're almost better off finding a pair of skates someone's trying to get rid of in the classifieds and taking the wheels off. A lot of folks sell used pairs that are very lightly used for a lot less than you'd pay for a set of new wheels. Edited by Adam, 2012-07-28 17:35:02 |

Lol ...a the north hill ? ? I can see why you would say " If you're still standing when you make it to the top". I can't even walk that...but then..I'm old. lol
I do remember being told it was illegal to roller blade on a sidewalk...is it still the law ? ? |

heheh, ya its definitely a bit of a grind.
As far as I know sidewalks are fair game. Can't find a link for Brandon, but this one from MPI at least confirms that they're okay in Wpg:

Generally you have to be pretty desparate to skate on the sidewalk though since unless you're in a part of town that was recently built you're just about guaranteed to find extremely rough patches that just aren't very good for blading.
I believe bicycles aren't legal unless the diameter of your rear wheel is 16 inches or less, but thats a whole different story:

Just as a follow up to a post I made... As luck would have it there are stakes just North of Maryland from 21st to 18th that very much resemble the outline of a new stretch of path. Time till tell, but would be great if that were the case |
