Death penalty.....

In todays National Post there is an article discussing the recent shooting rampage in the US where the guy allegedely killed 12 people and injured 58.The DA is considering the death penalty, but first discussing it with the victims families.Of course,we outlawes the death penalty decades ago...but what are your thoughts on this???The DA,is going to consider the death penalty...but will consult the victims family!i think that is the best possible outcome..to refer to the victims of the crime....thats what we need up here!!

personally

The only thing they should be consulted on is if they wish to be on the firing squad!

No

People making decisions involving any type of punishment for a crime should have no personal ties to the case.

These should be the last people that are asked the question 'does this man deserve to die!'

respecting the wishes of the victims loved families

before deciding on the death penalty . really i think the da.. should be making that desition .although these poor families ,,could very well make a better one. i think the death penalty should be brought back , but it seems to me lately the most haynes of crimes are get insanity pleas instead. and then getting out on day passes. i don,t know a lot about our jutice system ,but it sure stinks

Families shouldnt be able to call the shots....of coarse most are going to want the death penalty!
Our justice system sucks! From hiding sexual abusers, to parents murdering their children because of a messy divorce, and then claiming temporary insanity, and getting it!? Yes, we are canadians, we have the rep( or used to), of being a friendly and fair country, however, to the criminals its just heaven. They can commit crime, and get a slap on the wrist. Outrageous!

Victims / families should choose his path....

I agree, the victims families should call the shots. The gunman had control when entered into the situation, the families should decide his outcome. The babies in the theatre that didn’t get to live a long full life as they should have, Its such an outrage. They should release him into the public and see how long his life lasts with those papa’s out there.
Off topic….I’ve often thought while watching a movie in my fav. Spot….very top left. How on earth would I get out if I ever had too? There really should be an exit up top. I wonder how many lives could have been saved if people were able to run to another exit that was not directly behind, or adjacent to the shooter? These poor people had to run right to him to get out.

he should have just been shot at the theatre thursday night. No matter what you say he still shot 70 people killing 12

Bring

the death penalty back to Canada yesterday!!

As for the Colorado situation, the DA is merely consulting with the victims for their input...the decision is ultimately up to the DA's office to make.

well

The victims family should have no say. If the death penalty is a option it is not the victims family to decide.

In Canada -- in the case of Clifford Olson etc yep we should have had it. Steven Truscott and Milgard would now be dead but innocent. I prefer the lord to judge all later but the killers never to be ever out of jail.

If I could trust our justice system I would say bring back the death penalty. Sadly I can not. No to bringing it back! I really like the exporting of people from other countries back to home though if they break our laws!!!

clifford olson was a mass murderer with no remorse...the other two cases were less horrific...they wouldnt have got the death penalty even when it was in force...common tactic used by the bleeding hearts...

Both good points. I am and will argue that whether it is in Canada or the States there has been too many mistakes. West- I am not a bleeding heart but I really do not trust the fawk ups we in Canada have had. I will add in no way shape or form you could say those other cases would have not led to a death warrant if the public opinion was pushing for it.

You may have that kill them all and let God sort it out later attitude and sometimes I did in the past.

I truly wish that the olson type cases could lead to the chair/rope or whatever.
The history of screw ups in the past and the great chances in the future speak otherwise.

Good post and good points.

sorry folks

We live in Canada so we have no "justice system".What we have is a "legal system" run by lawyers. This is designed to protect the guilty and get them back on the streets quickley so they can reoffend and bring more money to the lawyers.
As for death penalty, "we" did not get rid of it, the politicians did that against the will of the majority. A large majority of the people told their representatives to keep it but party leaders told them to follow party lines and vote against it, so that is what happened.

.

You cannot let someone with personal ties to a case have any say in it, that defeats the purpose of a justice system. Mind you, the families wouldn't be making the final say, they would just be advising the DA on what to pursue.

I'm glad we don't have the death penalty in Canada. Not because no one deserves it, because there sure as hell are some criminals that deserve it; but because we still do not have a way of proving everything with 100% accuracy.

If there is even a 0.00000000000001% chance that we would be executing the wrong person, that is way too possible.

As for those who think we should have the death penalty to deal with our overcrowded prisons...well come on now. Think a little bit. Maybe we should stop jailing victim-less offenders or making our rehabilitation programs a bit better before we go talking about killing every petty thief or gangbanger out there.

Only fitting

I don't know how I feel about asking the families. Personally if someone killed someone I loved for no reason there would be no question in the matter, but that's just it. I think that a**hole made his decision about his own life when he tried to kill a bunch of people just trying to watch a movie. There was no provocation, no remorse, just cold blooded murder and I think he deserves to die. He committed a very serious crime and there is no justification for his actions. No matter what his "reasons" he killed people knowing full well he was going to be in serious trouble in a country that still allows the death penalty. Guilty would be my verdict if I was on the jury and I really don't think there would be anything to change my mind.
