It's hard to tell from the pic. You could try looking up termite images or wikipedia. |

| | | Nah | | |
It's a moth. The thorax is far too large for it to be a termite. They look more like winged ants. |

absolutely a moth. There are tons that look just like that flying around my outside light. Google termite and see if you can find even one picture that looks like that...you can't. |

Too small for a moth. I don't think it is a termite either. Maybe some sorta fly? |

| | | I posted a | | |
picture of a flying termite that maybe you can compare. It doesn't appear to be the same, but like others have said your picture is a little blurry. |

| | | moth or termite??? | | |
If it were me I would take the picture to a conservation officer for verification whether it is or not. I looked up termite on the internet "google: termite pictures. This picture looks to similar to a termite and the larva looks similar. This would ease your mind. Hope you have luck with this.

| | | Thanks guys! | | |
I think I'm going to take it to a conservation officer for verification. We haven't found anymore in the house. Of course the worry comes if it is a termite...we have deeper troubles. |

| | | It's a moth with it's wings folded up. | | |
In Canada, termites are native to BC only, and are seldom found in MB and SK - our temperatures just aren't warm enough. Also, termites are pretty easy to identify because they have distinctive jaws. If they are winged, the wings are clear like a dragonfly, and they tend to look like a cross between a cockroach and a ant.
On the other hand, moths don't have mouths. Many species don't eat at all, but those that do have a tongue-like structure called a proboscis. Also, the wings of most moths are opaque, and coated in a powdery substance.
Edit: termites also live in colonies. You wouldn't just find one, you would find many. Edited by Word Bird, 2012-07-24 19:31:11 |

Take it to BU, come into the science building, from Louise, just as you turn west from 18th, and come through the south doors, first door to the left is Betty, tell Betty you want to figure out what this bug is... 100%sure you'll get your answer since we've got an abundance of profs that can help you with your dilemma... |

... post the results of having it checked out? I think this may be similar to something I have recently seen (trying to trap/catch one proving more difficult than I imagined).
thanks |

Google winged ants. Plenty of images and Wikipedia has a good write up on it. |
