40+ "singles" meet-up?

I have had more than a few people ask me to try and resurrect our "singles meet-up" night but have reservations about doing it the same way we did before. The age was too broad and I think some people expected "things" that it was not set out to provide.

I am just putting this out as a feeler to see if there actually would be enough interest to try and set up a regular 40+ "singles" meet-up.

We used to play pool and bowl at Thunderbird - we could do that as well but would like to maybe start off with a BBQ meet and greet at Dinsdale park or somewhere like that.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, please.

And let's leave the "why the age restriction?" argument out of this. I am saying 40 as a rough age to set the bottom line. There are not a lot of places for single people over 40 to meet and I thought this might be something worth trying. (Yes, I know there is the Club 55 - does anyone know what they do and how often they meet?)

sounds great

I'm newly back to Brandon and would love a way to meet new people. Why did it not continue? were there problems with it?

No

I think the biggest problem was it was not age specific and we had from 18 to 60 year old people. It's pretty hard to come up with activities to please that wide of an age group.

I say 40+ because that is the age group I fit in.

Sounds good!

I would be interested in meeting some new people. I have been separated for a year & its time to meet new people in general!

Let me know

I also would be interested if it it is time when I could attend. Everyone likes BBQ's and Potluck dinners are always a good event. Tried a coffee house one evening it was well attended as well.

How about

30+ singles? I find the 30's and 40's seem to mix pretty well!

Hmmm

If I said 30+ there would be someone who would say "why not 20+?"

But there doesn't seem to be that much interest and it is a lot of work to organize... so unless more people are interested and someone is willing to help, then I will drop the idea.

Well

The first "singles Night" only had 8 people show up. It was fun and more showed up as time went on.

So, globaltraveller, when and where would you like to have a BBQ?

just a suggestion

im not single or in my 40's but i love to plan things. lol

why not just set a date/place/time that chris v and global traveller can agree on. post that date here and on the events calendar. perhaps chris or gt can supply the bbq and then if you want to come, you bring your own meat to bbq and a small side dish or bag of chips etc to share. that way, no one is out any money on food and you can take home whatever you brought. and if only a few show up, oh well. at least you tried and perhaps the ones that do show up find some new friends or hopefully even a new relationship!!

you can even bring some lawn games to play like football, frisbee, lawn darts, bocce ball, ladder ball, etc. breaks the ice a little i find when you have some activity to do. or even cards or board games if the area you are at has tables? just my suggestion..

I worded that very poorly. I meant the first singles night almost two years ago now. Sorry for the confusion.

When it is organized, it will be announced.

So

globaltraveller and I have exchanged a couple of messages and I am wondering who would be interested in coming out for a BBQ at one of the local parks next Saturday evening.

I am thinking "keep it simple" - hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, pop/water/juice, etc.

Just confirming 40+ - well will check calendar but this seems like a great idea - not many opportunities like this in the city.
Since move to Brandon in 2009 - have learned of a couple groups - Club 77 and Prairie Singles but most of those attendees are nearing 65 years of age - so this idea of an age group could be very welcome in this city.
People who are still in the workforce and those who are already retired have different interests and with all respect conversations are enlightening but lifestyle is different for these two age groups.

I think

its a great idea too and if we could keep it going as a regular group, I think we could grow the group as we go. I agree...ages have specific lifestyles and interests. Meeting new people is never a bad idea!! So I hope we have LOTS of people come out, tell your friends lol...

Of course it would be free. I would ask that everyone who wants to come to let me know what they can bring for food, pop, juice, snacks, etc.

Okay whoever thinks that they will just show up and eat for free must not be understanding of this type of meeting - this is not to my understanding a funded by anyone in particular group - rather it is just like if you were at home responsible for at least some cost of your food - and so in saying that if everyone attending contacts the two people who are coordinating then it is my understanding that it will be like a potluck whereby they will be keeping tract of what each person plans on bringing so that there is a good variety of food and beverages. Kudos - on working on this one guys.

kind of

a potluck idea...what is the best for everyone? bring a food item whether its like salad or plates and then everyone bring what they want to BBQ? OR people can sign up to look after one particular thing..like potato salad,or dishes, or drinks or hotdogs or hamburgers or buns or whatever. We can keep a running list on the thread if you want or start a new thread with who's coming and what they are bringing so everyone knows what is needed OR pm ChrisV and let him keep track What would everyone feel more comfortable with? democracy wins! LOL

Potluck

If people post on here or PM me then I can get a rough idea of how many are coming. I will buy hot dogs and provide disposable plates and cutlery.

Suggestions for others: condiments, pop, juice, bottled water, potato (and/or other) salad, burgers, smokies, buns (hot dog and hamburger), napkins, disposable cups(?)

Free

I interpreted the "free" comment as in, if THEY were free/available/not working etc I don't think they meant pay to go.

Have fun!

s

Dinsdale Park (the one on first with the train in it)or Queen Elizabeth Park (behind the water treatment plant on 26th and McDonald)? QEP is more remote but DP has a gazeebo with a fire stove in it. Either will do. Both have play structures for kids if they are brought, both have wood burning BBQs and picnic tables. QEP has bathrooms, does DP?
