Abortion

Hello,
I have recently found out that I am pregnant. I am unsure of what the next steps are that I should take.
Is there somewhere in Brandon that deals with this specifically? Do I just go to the doctor (is the walk-in okay?)? Or do I need to travel to Winnipeg to terminate the pregnancy?

yes

there is a place in brandon (sorry can't remember the name) that will allow you to terminate your pregnancy up to a certain point (not sure how many weeks) your doctor would be your best bet to go talk to and he/she can point you in the correct direction.

No you do not have to go to Winnipeg for an abortion.

Good luck.

You can feel free to PM me if you need any advice or have any questions!

Everyone has the right info above for Brandon.

If you do go to Winnipeg, you'll be making an appointment with Dr.Bernier.

Suggestion

I definitely wouldn't suggest contacting the Crisis Pregnancy Centre if you're even considering terminating the pregnancy, as they are not pro-choice, and therefore don't offer any abortion referrals or support in this regard.

Instead, I'd suggest contacting the Sexuality Education Resource Centre at 204-727-0417 for information on ALL of your legal pregnancy options, or calling Public Health at 204-578-2500 for pregnancy options counselling. Again, Public Health will be non-judgmental and offer information on all of the legal pregnancy options, including abortion.

correct information

There is some not-quite-correct information above. Termination of pregancy is done in Brandon by two of the Gynecologists; you must be referred to them by either an MD or NP or one of the Public Health Nurses in the Sexual Health program at town center. One does terminations up to ten weeks, and the other up to twelve weeks. If you are not certain of your dates, you will need an ultrasound first; this can only be ordered by an MD or NP and may take some time to get an appointment or you may need to travel out of town for a quicker appointment if you are able. The procedure is done at the hospital; there is not a 'clinic' in Brandon that does terminations like in Winnipeg. Public Health Nurses at the Sexual Health program or an NP are more likely to have time to discuss your options vs a walk-in doctor who may be more rushed.
In Winnipeg, the easiest way to access services is through Women's Health Clinic; no referral is needed (you can phone and make your own appointment) and they do terminations up to sixteen weeks, and can make referrals to other providers for terminations past that point. The link:

I would say to speak to your doctor about it. They will point you in the right direction. That is what I did back in the day.

I just got back from having to terminate. I had to terminate because a large blood clot had formed behind the baby and was pushing it out. I pm'd you what you need to do and if you ahve questions about the procedure I gave you my email as well. But before you go to judge other people for what they choose to do think of all the reasons they might have to.

Trust her advice...she knows what she is talking about and what she has posted is accurate.
You need independent, impartial information in order to make any decisions. This would include your partner if possible, but in the end, the dicision is yours alone. The options must be explained to you in order to make an informed decision.

Public Health

The Public Health Sexual Health Clinic is the place to go. They can give you the information you need and set up the appointments for you. If you are in a small community, see your public health nurse.

Unfortunately, if you see a doctor at your clinic or at walk-in, and they disagree with your choice, they can decline to help you. It's similar to a doctor refusing to provide access to the birth control pill or morning after pill. It's not right, but there are still some doctors who do this.

I hope your okay.

Not too many people say this but good luck and no matter what you do just seek some personal counselling after everything is said and done. To fully deal with the stress and pain of what you are going through. You are very brave and I hope everything works out and you make the decision that is best for you.

Good luck with your decision.

Just for everyone's information, you do not need to see a doctor for the morning after pill. You just need to ask for a phamacist for it.

family dr

just go to your family doctor and they will refer you to the place. the place only does it up to a center point though and if you are passed that you need to go to Winnipeg (& they will only do it if you are no further than 3 months).

thread

A reminder regarding previous posts in this thread that had to be addressed. Abortion in general is a topic that brings out many passionate opinions as we've seen in previous threads on that general topic. I can respect that but this is not one of those threads. The OP has asked for a specific kind of advice. If anyone feels that we've gone long enough without having that general debate I'd invite you to start a discussion, but this particular thread is not the place for it as it would quickly hijack the discussion off of someone getting an answer to a specific question they have asked. Thank you

Pharmacists can also refuse to provide it on moral grounds. Public Health is still the best option for judgement-free access to reproductive health care.

....

The morning after pill is only to be used in the first 72 hours after unprotected sex. It does not work if you're already pregnant.

As per the OP .... I had a friend go to that Pregnancy Crisis Center looking for abortion advice, and they made her feel horrible! I'd steer clear of that place. I hope all goes well for you during this hard time.

Morning after

I was only stating that plan b was easy to obtain since a previous poster had made it seem like it was difficult. I do know that it is only affective within a certain time period and not applicable to this situation.

You can get it done for free in Brandon clinic. But after 10-12 weeks, they will not.

They do it at the hospital.

I know someone who got one.
See a gyno in the clinic like dr. sutter or someone

Take time to think it through

You are facing a tough decision. Hope you don't go through it alone. It can be hard having no one to talk to about this. Check out the Crisis Pregnancy Centre. They aren't mean or anything. They just help you talk through all of your options with no pressure. They respect life and really care how you are doing. Some people don't deal well with stuff after an abortion so take time to get to the truth of the matter. You do have more than one choice. And there is help to see you through if you choose to keep the baby or place the baby for adoption.

Uh... Plan B is available over the counter without a pharmacist available.

Hello

Yes you can terminate in Brandon. Dr. Suter is the only gyne that performs this in Brandon. Call the office, but I think you need a GP referal they will only go up to about 11 weeks ( I know someone that had one done at 11 weeks)so you better get on this if you are certain this is the route you want to take. After that time, you have to go to wpg, but most are refusing now after 16 weeks...

If you are 9 weeks or over you will be sent to Winnipeg for the operation. They will do the operation up to 20 weeks of pregnancy. Dr. Bernier was the doctor who performed my operation and he was by far the kindest doctor I have ever had the pleasure of having. Best wishes.

Info

curlysister said "Previous posts contain some incorrect information regarding providers and time frames. Please see my earlier post for accurate information. "

So if people are getting the info wrong, why not just share the correct info with everyone instead of being so vague in your posts. Who are the two gynos who perform the procedure, and how late will they do it. What is the best way to get referred to them?
Tha simple info would help the OP the best.
