Haircut/Dye

so i've never had my hair professionally dyed before and i've been thinking of changing my hairstyle (cut, dye, highlights, maybe some side bangs). change is a pretty big deal for me lol so i was wondering if anyone knew where would be the best place to do it AND how much would it cost on average. i have medium length brown hair. i could phone around but i thought i'd get some opinions/favorites first..

Regis

I go to Amanda or I believe her name is Becky at Regis in the mall and I've never had a bad haircut or dye job there

She is great! She is on the low road to Shilo. Her fees are half of what you will end up paying in the city.

first timer

Being your first time, have you considered going to the college? I am all about funk and with them currently training they should be up to date with the newest trends. And the price will be way cheaper. Once you are a non color virgin, venture to the more expensive salons. I can not speak for a hair dresser in Brandon as I do not live there, but if you are ever in Virden, call Nu-Art and try and get in with Baylee. She is incredible and I am super fussy.

if price is one of your bigger concerns then i would suggest the colleges as well. they need the training and experience and the teachers are always nearby to make sure nothing too drastic happens lol.

i always like to take pictures of what i want to give them an idea of the cut/colour i want(as sometimes i dont explain it well lol) but make sure YOU realize that you may not walk out looking like the picture. different types of hair will look different depending on the cut obviously.

I've tried hair colleges. It is a gamble. I don't like having to pay them BEFORE I have anything done. It suggests to me that they have had unhappy people who don't want to pay after they see what they get.

i agree with you, its a gamble. but i think its a gamble no matter where you go if its the first time there since they wont know your hair yet. i have a bit of a fear when i get my hair cut as i have had more then a couple bad experiences in salons. lol. once you find a good stylist who knows your hair and what it does and will do, DONT MOVE!!! haha

yes, its just hair and it will grow back. however, i have the slowest growing hair ever!!! curly hair cut too short with bangs??? yup, took a good 2-3 years to recover from that one!!! haha

I believe what you are referring to is called a 'flat fee' or rate.

Not sure what u mean by flat fee. Only the colleges have charged me before they would provide the service and did not add to it when it was done. I've had some "experiences" and they were not corrected by the instructor. At least if a salon does a boo boo they will try and and make it right usually.

:D

Thank you everyone for your advice and referrals lol I have died my hair countless times at home but never at a salon.
I was considering a hair school but since i'm tryin bangs and a whole new do, i was thinking of going professional. I know what you mean about finding someone I like then sticking to her lol
Price isn't too much of an issue the first time, I just don't want a suprising $200 bill for something I dont like :s plus my hair grows sooo fast so i imagine a lot of up keep will be needed

Rates..the cost of doing business

Do hair dressers set their own rate or does the company they work for? Not sure of all the ins and outs...but have heard of "chair rental".

A flat rate is a set rate, instead of prices set by evaluating what they believe the market will bear.
