X-fest Shuttles

What X-fest Shuttles?
The walk to the Discovery Center was brutal, ruined an otherwise great evening. And while I give kudos to Beef and the gang for a great first day, the shuttle bus system was a disaster.
I'm too sore to walk today and worried that I'm going to have to.
Kinda wish I only had friday tickets now...

It's not that far a walk from TC to TDC is it?

The shuttle was awful

We waited for over two hours to catch the bus back to the Discovery center. Not the shuttle, they quit running early and were not there to take us back to our car. Then, the bus was hired by the roadhouse and we had to beg and plead the driver to drop us off at the DC. Thank god he did after standing for 2 horus waiting for him.

Another thing that annoyed me last night was

No where on the radio or on the website did they say that we needed photo id to get into the grounds. Who the heck brings a purse or even a wallet to these events, who the heck wants to carry that all night... I was given a under 18 bracelet to get into the grounds, could not buy liquor because of it, all because I did not have my drivers license... I had my 15 year old son with me and the 19 year old bimbo at the gate would not believe me when I said that I was over 18. OMG, come on, I am over 40... A little better advertsing about that Beef would have been nice! You know me, do I look under 18??

Wow

That is pretty unbelievable, but people told me that there were tons of patrons walking back to the discovery centre along Grand Valley road in the dark. That's pretty scary considering alot of those people are probably drunk.

People walking

The lack of shuttles forced most people to walk the highway in the dark. Very unsafe and a very irresponsible situation to be forced into. Advertising shuttles, people expect to be shuttled and from a public safety view, it would be a necessity.
I hope everyone on that walk last night is OK today.

Walking

There are safety in numbers and considering how many people were out walking - seriously, not the best thing, especially with drunk people. The last thing this events needs is to be tied to something gone wrong so hope everyone was alright having to walk. Still think it is safer to generally walk in Brandon then, say, from the MTS centre.

To anyone out walking, don't get too drunk if ya can help it and try to walk in a group. Avoid walking by yourself!!

I've walked countless times in downtown Winnipeg after a concert and have never experienced any sort of situation where I thought I was in danger. always lots of light, tons of police and everyone is generally headed to the closest pub for food and drinks after, so everyone's in a great mood.

Walking on a DARK highway in the middle of the night, no street lights with countless intoxicated people who are obviously and rightfully pissed off with no sort of security or police presence, that is just outright wrong.

Planning should have been better. Don't feed me the line, "if you could it better, than do it yourself".

If you're going to put on a successful event like this, then you should be professional enough to own up to a promise of shuttles for your patrons. Beef put a lot of people in a bad situation last night because of false promises, and he should at least come out and make some sort of statement regarding what went on last night.

Any supporting info...

slinger said "Who was the stupid bitch that left pissed up last night and mowed down the two people on the road in her car "

on "slinger's" post about a person(s) being hit by a vehicle last night on that road?

This would really be sad if alcohol was involved (either the driver or pedestrian)...if there is truth to this post of course.

Play safe folks....and enjoy.

shuttlebus service

I had friends volunteer there who...

Were depending on the shuttle bus to take them home. They scrambled to get a cab. I was told it was like a mad dash then a fight to actually get into a cab.

Next time one suggestion to the X-Fest organizers. When you are going to provide a free service like a shuttle bus, make sure you give away some sort of shuttle bus ticket to those who will be needing the service. Also, alot of people who got on those busses were drunk as skunks and were shuttled back to where they left their cars, in that state I wonder how many were drinking and driving after being dropped off?

The event I heard was very good. These are learning pains and i'm sure as the years go by, the organizers will take all mistakes and learn from them.

Found this...

from the BPS website (media releases).

August 11, 2007
RELEASE AUTHORIZED BY: Sgt. G. Jones #57
RELEASED ON: 2007-08-11
ROBBERY WITH VIOLENCE
An OBO employee driving a truck was approached by a male asking for a ride to the Turtle Crossing Camp Ground. The driver agreed and as they approached Grand Valley Road the suspect demanded that he be taken to buy cigarettes. The driver refused and the suspect then grabbed the steering wheel and began to punch the driver repetitively. The driver stopped the vehicle and ran towards a City Bus with the suspect following him and continuing to strike him. The suspect then returned to the truck and drove away. The victim was injured by did not require medical attention. Police were called and the truck was located in the Mohawk lot on 18th Street North. It was learned that the suspect had entered the store and taken two packs of cigarettes and walked out. Police located the suspect a short time later on 18th Street North where he was arrested without incident. A 26 year old man will appear later today charged with Robbery with Violence and Theft Under $5,000.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT
A 20 year old man was walking east on the Grand Valley Road when returning to the City from X-Fest when he was struck by a car. The pedestrian only suffered minor injuries and was treated and released at hospital. Police investigation revealed that the 23 year old female driver of the motor vehicle was under the influence of alcohol. She was arrested at the scene and will appear in Court later today charged with Impaired Driving Causing Bodily Harm and Refuse Breathalyzer.

Be careful folks. Have fun, but be careful...

And they asked for Photo I.D. This has happened at most all of the events I have been to in Brandon. Set a good example Marnie and keep your I.D. available on hand, put it in your bra hahaha and pray that Kim Mitchell isnt there.

i walked

it was not fun, and was scary. so many people were jumping out in front of moving cars along grand valley road, im surprised more people didnt get hit.
i agree that some sort of organization is needed in the whole shuttle bus thing, walking all that way just to fight someone for a cab was ridiculous. next year(if there is a next year) i hope something is in place to prevent anymore incidents.
the concert itself was a hit! had a blast while i was in the grounds.

lighting & shuttle sevice

I agree with madcampers review on the shuttle bus service or lack of it all together! Where was it when so many needed it? Where was the lighting that was so badly needed when the sun went down and you couldn't even tell if anyone came out of the bathroom ahead of you because it was pitch black? The ball diamonds were equipped with powerful night lighting standards that they never bothered to turn on. Why? That would cut into Beef's profit line. At Minnedosa you could always see where ever you were going at all times at all locations, here you were in the dark! It's no wonder people were being attacked, run down or whatever else. Next time you plan someting like this think it all the way through first and include some safety features such as keeping the place lit, unless your looking for a lawsuit. Other than that the music was great and the stage looked awesome.
Cheers

Everyone must take

some responsibility on the shuttle problems. We were fortunate enough to get on the first shuttle to leave after the concert ended and I really feel for the drivers. Why did these young people feel the need to start banging, punching the shuttles, not moving out of the way for us to get through, walking down the middle of the highway? And from what I seen alot of them never tried waiting for the shuttle at the appropriate drop spot but thought by walking up the road they could catch a ride faster and then when the driver wouldn't stop and give them a ride they became violent. Why would there not have been at least 1 BPS car with the lights on at the gate as a reminder to those planning on drinking and driving that there's a pretty good chance they will get caught. They have no problem setting up a checkstop around Houston's when the bar is closing.

Well then you haven't been around portage place late at night walking by an aboriginal street gang who think they own everything (including the sidewalk that we were walking on-"get off our block.")...but i digress...

As for walking back from X-FEST, i know how dark it can get after those outdoor festivals, and yeah, it can get pretty scary. Too bad there are always incidents like that that ruin an otherwise great time.

I've been to countless concerts in downtown Winnipeg and have NEVER had ANY problems with ANY streetgangs. this is 1, 2, even 3 in the morning. In all the years i've been walking in downtown Winnipeg, I've NEVER had an issue like you've described.

I dont think that night two was as bad. I had to pick up a few friends and saw a handful of people walking down the side of Grand Valley rd.

I agree with putting a cruiser with lights on at the entrance, that would make people think twice about getting into their vehicles. I also believe that BPS had full staff on shift and those doing duty at Xfest, so a checkstop may not have been possible.

Anyway, next year will only be better, congrats to Beef et al. on trying something new in Brandon!

that things didn't turn out tragic on Friday night.

That aside, Beef, you did a really good job of recovering from that fiasco by Saturday night. My friend & I shuttled both nights, and we agreed that Saturday was a huge improvement on Friday as far as lighting, shuttles - and TOILET PAPER! Quick recovery dude and good job!

thanks

Thanks Chris

sure we had a few problems that people will dwell on and as a group we corrected so many issues like toilet paper on Saturday

But also remember when you leave the Roadhouse or Houstons on a busy night you can wait an hour for a cab.

Thanks for your patience and understanding
