The Lords Prayer

Our father who art in heaven
hallowed be thy name
thy kingdom come
thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day
Our daily bread
Forgive us for our debts
As we forgive those indebted to us
lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil
For thine is the kingdom
and the power, and the glory
forever.. Amen

This is a prayer we may say in thanks and for safety. Jesus gave it to us himself and It is very special to me for that reason. I have remembered it since sunday school I learned it at age 6
and other psalms in my memory and my heart.

this is the version I learned

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy Kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory. for ever and ever. Amen

I learned Misty's version

That's the version used in the Presbyterian churches. (debts and debtors) I said it yesterday in church.

Simple

Brian said "so why did they take these prayers out of schools it is certainly a shame that they did. They should bring it back plus O'Canada song"

Because there is no place in the school system for religion of any faith, and it is particularly distasteful to push one over the other.

School is a place to learn facts. It is not a place for the brain washing that the religious cults perform -that is for in your church.

If you want kids to say a prayer...

Brian said "so why did they take these prayers out of schools it is certainly a shame that they did. They should bring it back plus O'Canada song"

then practice YOUR religion at home before school. Leave the other kids out of it.

Some of the students do not follow that particular religion.

Oh I hate agreeing with people but... haha

Really, the home and the church is where children need to learn religion. Forcing all kids to say lords prayer in school is wrong. What if a family is athiest, I mean, thats their choice, so we cant force certain religious beliefs on anyone. Teach our kids to read and write and leave the parents and the churches to teach them religion.

What about other faiths

Brian said "so why did they take these prayers out of schools it is certainly a shame that they did. They should bring it back plus O'Canada song"

How about The Wiccan Credo in schools, and of course O'Canada?

Canada

We live in CANADA. We have freedom of religion. O'Canada is played/sang every morning at my sons school and it is in the Brandon School Division. It is our countries anthem. The lords prayer is just that, a prayer. It is religious and has no place in the public school system where all cultures and religions come together. One religions doctrines cannot override everyone else's beliefs. Christianity is not the be all to end all, there are lots of different religious systems out there.

Religious schools

If you want your kid to have religious teaching in school enroll them in one of religious schools. Like Christian Heritage or St. Augustine's. Public schools are open to all and religion should not dictate how they are run.

The versions

Yes I admit, I too used the tresspasses version at one point.
But I feel I have matured and feel comfortable with this prayer as now I'am a adult and Whatever It is that you feel comfortable with that is the best choice for you.
I was baptised a catholic and my family is roman catholic, however today I'am christian.

A littleon religion in school

In todays Brandon newspaper there is a determined girl who is supporting the distribution of gideons bibles in schools.
they are the very same books that you will find in any motel room.
I agree with this woman when she questions the release of the little black book in which one of my teens now own.
I've looked at it myself and I do have an open mind. In any case, I agree with her, If students choose to read the sex eduction information, they could also be OFFERED another type of black book as well IMO.

Just a point that I find very coincidental,
Any other readers,Ever wonder why there is violence very much taking place in the schools today?
I support the distribution of the bibles at least being OFFERED.

Reciting the Lord's prayer where we went to school....everything is a choice and I personally respect Christian values, IMO I think the world needs less greed and more good, regardless of practices and choices.

All "Good Books" have their place

I believe that they should all be available to each student in the library of each schools, a religion section.

The Muslim "equivalent" to the bible. Should this choice, and perhaps others, not be offered as well.

That is, if any religious material should be distributed in school.

Bible reading at school

I haven't been out of school for that long, but when I was in grade 2 (about 20 years ago) my teacher read to us from the Bible and we had to recite the lord's prayer everyday. I found it very inappropriate and support a consistent removal of this kind of indoctrination and child abuse in public school.

If the school division chose to offer an elective course on the study of religions, this may be something more people are interested in and would give students a taste of philosophical and religious studies they may wish to study at a post secondary level.

Agree

madcamper said "I believe that they should all be available to each student in the library of each schools, a religion section. "

Schools should have religious/spiritual knowledge available in libraries for personal choice. I recall O Canada and saying this prayer.

Bryan, you're right, this is nothing more than child abuse. Pushing religion on students has no place in public school.

it's no different than other extremists or fundamentalists from other relgions forcing a belief on children. Glad we don't have much of that here.

not that religion should be forced!

I believe that the option should be there..and maybe a little more WELL known that it is there... rather than non-existant in todays society!

in the National Anthem, we call on God toward the end. Not looking to add to this "nobody's mind will be changed" debate but, should the National Anthem now be banned because of it's asking of God?

Lord's Prayer.

I learned "And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors" in the Church of Scotland.

I would far sooner have my kids brainwashed by "religion" than brainwashed by the pusher down the street.
Brainwashing takes soooo many forms!!
