Hydro Rates

Got my Hydro bill and it jumped up again. I owe an extra $150. on my Equal payment charges. It use to be we always were ahead on our EEP. It seems we use less, but our charges keep going up. Manitoba Hydro seems to be able to charge whatever they feel like and we have to pay it.

I called about this has I had the same issue my epp went up $50.
they say its cause of the winter we had. If u are using less then your epp call them up and ask to maintain your old epp. That is what I did.

and if your weary about remember end of August if u over paid u get it back as credit on your bill.

hydro

my end of year hydro/gas bill was over 1000.00. wow so much for the equal payment plan that I have been on for the last 16 years in this house.

then I noticed one was estimated and one was actual. I called they made an error.

But my bill is still close to 600.00 ouch!

Not very happy usually I get about a 200.00 credit!

Hydro

If you want you can ask to have the monthly amount increased. Every bill shows what your actual bill would be as to the monthly. Rates have gone up but it is a good idea to read the meter and keep track of usage. If something wierd happens you would be on top of it. A suprise of $600 did not just happen last month.

EPP

we are on EPP and got screwed one year and had to pay a whole lot extra. Now we have had them increase it and we also add an extra $20 to every payment. This year, we will have two free months. I know they are not really free, but it does feel good.

what gets me

is they estimate the last month instead of reading it an actual, and yes I know I could read it BUT they could have it so the last one is read. Ours went up 40 per month plus we owe an additional 350. We kept track at thought we were fairy close but the last estimate was extremely high, considering our last actual was very low how can they estimate it 150 more in August then July when were were away most of August.

thing going on across Manitoba including me, it is frustrating, this Government has to go ,but it wont be before they destroy our good province. Seems they are H bent to drive us all into a poverty setting or destroy us trying.

Your rates did not go up!!!!!!!!!! If u think your getting robbed go off the epp program. If u over pay in the year u get it back if u under paid u owe. They average it out based on your previous years use. Keep your eye on your bills and actually read them.

$4000

Our final bill of the EPP year came last week and it stated we owed over $4000!! Called and they discovered an error was made when their 'actual' reading was done!! Bill was recalculated and still owe $800+ apparently!! Haven't received revised bill yet but whomever figures these EPP payments needs to find a new job....customer should not have to pay an outrageous amount at end of the EPP year if calculated properly!! A couple $100 I can see but $800+!!!

The problem I have with the EPP is that although

I understand it was supposed to be an average monthly usage (plus percent increase) of the previous year's usage...I could not understand why my monthly bill was going up and down rather than stay at the same amount. Then at the end we somehow used a whole bunch more energy than thought. Are you sure our rates did not go up? I am pretty certain that a rate increase was approved and implemented, so energy usage would not have to increase a lot in order to have an increase in cost. I suppose we should be thankful we don't have smart meters yet...

Look around....

we paid a lot more when we lived in Edmonton, and you can't blame the government since the P.U.B has to approve rates. Hydro is usually lucky if they get a 2% increase. We have the lowest hydro rates in the country, and possibly North America. My Buddy in the Battle River utility area outside Edmonton had his rates go from $8 somthing a KW/H two christmases ago to $13 something...in one month!! They don't have to get approval there. Not a nice christmas for them. I ended up owing an extra $200 this year after the EPP, but I know we used more power, likely due to the longer winter. I'll be increasing our monthly payments.

.

I called about mine. I was $192 short on my final tally. They said they take the shortage, divide it by 11 and put the bill up by that much per month. So I figured mine should go up $17.50 but they had increased it by $41. So I asked them to put it up by $22 instead. They will set it at whatever you want within reason.

I refuse

To be on the EPP. I was constantly getting bills for $1000 at the end of the term. I just pay by the month now and if I ever go back on it I'll figure out what I should pay myself. I sure do like their hydro loan program though! :D

Hydro will skim on the EPP

My usage was about 300 over on the monthly charge for the entire year, but the epp rate went up like 850$. Then you get a credit at the end of the year, but really they are taking your money and putting it in there bank account.

Imagine the interest they would accrue throughout the province.

I will be phoning them today to get it reduced. This isnt the first time they have done this as well.

when we

were on epp at eh old house, i could have swarn that the bill showed what we had paid and what we had used adn the difference.

we paid $150/month and always had some left over at the end.(1900sq foot house with duckless ac)

hell our current house which we are still doing renos on at worse last year was only $400 in one month.

how much are you all paying on your epp to still owe that much at the end??

FYI

For whoever said "you can't blame the govt as PUB has to approve rates"
Mb. Hydro is a crown corporation, the Public Utilities Board is a group of political appointees riding the gravy train.
And estimating the final month for the EPP plan is just plain stupid.

I am in the country and always read my bill every month. I checked my bills for the year and at the beginning of the year we were on budget for $190 a month. Around May it was increased by Manitoba Hydro to $250. I was just under $200 short at the end of this month. They put on my bill that my new payment will be $259 a month. Seems expensive considering I have geothermal heat and air conditioning.

Difference for our apartment

is $54, and EPP goes up $4. But that was for our old apartment. Now that we are in a newly constructed apartment building with better windows and more efficient appliances, it should go down again.

I was wondering too. Our bill is usually $20-55 and it comes every couple months (Apartment). It will cost a little more from the air conditoner sometimes. This last bill it was $117! We don:t think we had it on that much. We unplug things, dont't leave things on.. grr.. not use to a big bill lol

I

think what was hurting us, older windows that had ice form, and a big North facing picture window. Which lead to the baseboard heaters being on more to keep a comfortable temperature during the cold periods.

I do

OKwithlife said "I don't understand how this huge payment comes as a surprise at the end of the month for all you people. Your bill should show what your are paying and what your usage was. Mine does. I knew exactly what to expect. I owed an additional $200.

Also don't be so lazy. Read your own meter every month and then you don't have to worry about them estimating it. "

read my own meter, and am still feeling ripped off, seems every 3 months MB Hydro adds another 2 % to the bill, think about it , that's a big deal at the end of the year, and for what, I still have the same service I did 20 years ago, theirs nothing new except Government squandering, and there people thinking of ways to squeeze every dime out of Manitobans they can,

I wouldn't be so miffed if we were on a grid that

was more stable and didn't result in surges, brown outs, and black outs.
Also, the whole claim about cheapest rates in the country are kind of getting old, much like Autopac, etc. I have lived in other provinces and it really isn't hard to make a comparison. Go to the Ontario Hydro website and use the info there to see how much your bill would be. If we are cheaper, it is not by much. To say that we are lucky is a bit of a joke too, as I would rather have other province's provincial tax rates or ability to purchase private insurance, etc.

Actually

glad I'm not on SaskPower, my Step-sister lives east of Cold Lake in Saskatchewan and they seem to have power outage quite often. And on perfect weather days.

Agree with wgabe

I also read my meter every month because we have to in the country. We seem to use less killowats and still get charged more. It doesn't stop Manitoba Hydro from raising you rates just because you read your own meter.

What do you mean by it seems we use less. The rates have gone up which are shown on your bill. It is silly to bash hydro if you do not add up your usage. kwh. In May there is a graph with 2 years usage for gas and electricity.
