Window suggestions?

I'm looking at replacing windows in my home. Ours are 20 plus years old and the condensation and coldness coming in during winter is too much! Every company is going to say their windows are best - but I'm looking for customers who've had windows installed - what's good? (Or who is good in terms of installation). Should you pay the extra money and get the "top of the line" brand? It's a big investment so hoping to get some insight from those who've been there, done that. I know we'll do triple pane - but not sure which brand would be the best. Also any opinions on "low e" and "argon"? Thanks!

South End Lumber

It has been several years since we had our windows replaced but after visiting several businesses, we went with the recommendation of a friend and purchased our windows from South End Lumber. The staff person we dealt with was very knowledgeable and came to the house to do all the measurements. The installer was great - other than seeing we actually had new windows in place there was no sign that he had even been in the house (all the mess was cleaned up and disposed of). Good luck with whoever you choose to upgrade your windows

Windows

We done ours 4 years ago. We used North Star windows and a friend and I installed them. 6 windows including the big front one was around $3500. Flip outs for easy cleaning, screened and attractive.

Polar Windows

Polar are the best ! If you will be living in your house for a long time go with Polar. If you are going to flip your house go with other suggestions. You pay for what you get and polar are awesome!

Not plygem windows

Do not use plygem windows. They are crap windows. I've been in my house for 4 years, already had 4 windows that have had they sealed failed and one window glass crack due to spontaneous breakage . Which the glass was covered under warranty, but labour wasn't . The labour isn't cheap.

Condensation

Even with new windows you most likely will get condensation during winter months.

thanks

Thank you for the suggestions and comments. Given our climate, I know there will be some condensation, but I think (and sure hope) it'll be less than with our current windows.

Any other comments are welcome.

we recommend Plygem

we have had plygem in our house for six years with no issues. Pricing was competitive too.

Polar

Have had my Polar Windows for years with not one problem. Lots of options for what style you want etc. You get what you pay for in this case. They might be more expensive than some but certainly worth the money as they stand by their product if there are problems.

Keystone Glass

We are in rural Manitoba and went with Keystone Glass for our triple pane Berdek (sp) windows....Couldn't ask for better service or professionalism...they are a "measure twice before you order" place...which meant a lot when our house is 120 years old with not exactly straight walls....

J &; M Windows

We recently had 4 awning windows installed by and purchased through J & M and couldn't be more satisfied with everything!

We did a lot of research and got comparable quotes for apples to apples windows also with lifetime warranty and J & M came in at the best price. The windows are North Star, made in London, ON, I believe, so manufacture and shipping was pretty quick.

The hardware is also strong and not like some of the plastic crud you see out there. EZ fit screens are awesome, no messing around with clips and clasps. Installers were excellent, no issues had.

We've already been through one winter with them and definitely noticed relief on our heating bill and less drafts. We will be going with them again next time we need windows for sure.

J&;M

I had 13 windows replaced by them last year. Best price, clean and incredible work. My job was not easy as my house is 100 years old and they saved original hardwood around all my windows. The best in town!

brands

I have installed Huron, Humphrey, Jeldwen and those cheap ones from Menards in the USA. The first two and polar are top of the line products.

As for argon gas, if you don't get it then you are wasting your money on new windows. A dual pane lowe window with argon is more energy efficient than a tripane with no lowe or gas. Most offer different lowe coatings that you can pick depending on if you want the "heat" from the sun to come in or not...depends on the room and what direction the window is facing.

I'd be careful with 1 of the companies listed here

I don''t think I can say their name but we had a company replace 2 windows in our home just over a year ago. We had problems with the windows from day 1. The owner (only contact we had for the company) would never come check it out and would just "no show" when we had made arrangements for him to come over, even though it meant my husband or I taking time off work. We have now been phoning almost weekly since Janunary and he will not call us back. Our next stop will possibly be the court house.

I would recommend

Yellowhead Windows & Doors in Neepawa, he came, measured, ordered & replaced our windows. In 2014, they replaced 6 Loewen wooden framed triple glazed windows. With two of those windows, they installed custom made garden doors in lieu of the windows. We were so pleased with them, we got them back last year & replaced 4 more windows, a entrance door & 2 basement windows which completed our project. Very professional, efficient, cleaned up after themselves & even took out some cupboards for us. They are worth a call.
