10th street Accident

When I was walking to the bus depot at around 3:45 pm today, I noticed that a bus drove into a building on 10th street. Details would be nice please.

Yep

According to this, there *were* 2 accidents involving city buses this afternoon.

Sheesh. It must be a full moon.

...

From what someone who witnessed the accident on 10th and Princess said... a stolen car ran a red light and the bus was trying to avoid a collision but that didn’t end up happening. (Obviously still needs to be confirmed by officials)

Accident

From what I could see there was a blue car also damaged sitting half on the sidewalk/street at 10th and Princess.

Full moon was yesterday, but maybe it's close enough ...

Craziness

I drove by and saw the police cordon, everyone has come up with their own version of events including a kid stole a buss and was having a showdown with the police...I am curious to see what the media release from the police will say. Hope no one got hurt throughout these shenanigans!

Police release

The below is from the police release today. No mention of injuries to anyone but the Brandon Sun reported one person had a cut to their head.

Stolen Vehicle vs. Transit Bus/Building Motor Vehicle Collision

At approx. 3:30 PM, police received a report that a 2011 Lincoln MKS had been stolen from a residence in the 300 blk of 4th St. The stolen vehicle was travelling East on Princess Ave. moments later when it went through a red light at 10th St. and Princess Ave. and struck a North bound transit bus, causing it to strike a building at the north- west corner of the intersection. The collision with the building caused structural damage and the bus had to be left in there overnight to prevent the possible collapse of the building. Residents of an upstairs residence had to be relocated due to safety concerns. Remediation work has taken place and it is expected that the bus will be moved today.

A twelve-year-old Brandon resident will appear in court this morning charged with Theft of a Motor Vehicle and numerous Highway Traffic Offences.

Unless

it's a typo in the media release, the driver we traveling the wrong way on Princess. Traffic flows to the west. Rosser flows to the east. So amazing there weren't other accidents and injuries.

Typo

It's most probably a typo. On one of the photos I've seen of the bus (#bdnmb on Twitter), there's damage to the front right corner, indicating the probable point of collision. So as the bus was heading north on 10th, the car would have to have been heading west on Princess.

And seeing as how the vehicle was stolen from the 300th block of 4th (betw Princess and Lorne), it makes sense that it would going west.

What's going on in Brandon?

Between the 2 drunk driving accidents and this that is 3 in 1 week yikes!and to think I was driving down just the day before and I don't normally go down Rosser. We seem to be getting crazier driver's in Brandon.

IMO

If someone runs from the police in a vehicle or drinks and drives causing damages, they should be responsible for any and all costs incurred, not MPIC ratepayers. They have chosen their actions, why should others pay for them?

driver

Is the driver of the bus ok? I haven’t seen anything on the condition of him/her. Sorry if I missed it. It looks so serious
Was downtown this afternoon and pulled over as 2 police cars screamed past me, then an ambulance. What on earth is happening to this city???
I was in my way home from a meeting last week and had a person try to get into my car while I was waiting at the lights at 26th & Vic. This person was obviously inebriated. I just don’t get it

I know it is

a natural reaction to try and avoid an accident by swerving but on the highway they say to brake under control but dont swerve to miss a deer or other animal.

I cant imagine the folks inside the bus when it swerves and brakes hard to avoid a car hit. and then to hit a building hard enough to breach the exteroir. a bit bome jarring

would it not be better for everyone, except the guilty party in the car, for the bus to brake under control but travel straight. if you hit the car so be it, it will usually bounce out of the way. but the people in the bus will not be thrown around so much.

from a law suit point of view, any one hurt in the bus would likely sue the city for injuries sustained. If the bus just braked, that is all the driver would be able to do so no law suit.

any thoughts

Lawsuit

No one involved in the accident can sue or be sued. It's a benefit of the personal injury protection plan provided by MPI. They (MPI) will pay for medical expenses and physio etc.

As for what the bus driver could or should have done, hind sight is 20/20. Do you know what YOU would do if you were in that situation? You can train and prepare for hypothetical situations all you want, but until you're in the situation you don't know what you're going to do. Your instincts and adrenaline take over.

I haven't heard of any injuries besides the one person who got a cut on their head. I hope that is the case, this could have ended differently had someone been on the sidewalk, or close to the impact of the bus. (I haven't heard of anyone was by the impact, anyone else?)

As for the 12 yr old, I'm curious as to how his parents reacted. Seems a lot of of 11-15 year olds are out of control in this city. Wasnt there another vehicle stolen and involved in an accident a few weeks ago, and the occupants were 11? Where are the parents?!

This city has definitely taken a turn for the worse. I fully support the police, but I think they have their hands full.

The car actually hit the bus, the bus driver didn't swerve to avoid it, he didn't see it coming!

sooo

Where exactly were the parents and why aren't they teaching their selfish child to not destroy and steal property, and be more respectful??? The kid could have killed someone, or many people. The kid could have drove on the sidewalk and ran over a bunch of people. Smh at parents letting their kids get away with things like this.

also

why weren't the parents more concerned about their child's whereabouts. He clearly was missing from school. It says they had a report at 3:30. Schools out around then. So clearly they weren't even in class. Maybe if they made sure their child was in school nothing would of happened. So stupid.
