After a few weeks of practices and a couple of exhibition games resulting in a loss at Virden and a decisive win over Souris, the regular season for Rivers Comets was set to begin on the week of May 23-27. However, due to Mother Nature having alternate ideas, the first two games of the Comets schedule were postponed to be played at a later date. With week one a write off, Comets opened their regular season schedule on Monday, May 30 versus Brandon Cubs.
A strong group effort and a quality start from ace pitcher Ryan Shaw got Comets in the win column with a 7-2 victory. Shaw worked four innings, striking out eight Cubs while only allowing a single hit and an unearned run. Cody Nolan came on to relieve Shaw and struck out two, allowing a run and earning the save over three innings. On offense, Al McFadden went two for four with a single and a double, scoring two runs.
Buddy Mayert, making his Comets debut, also added two hits in four at bats, driving in a run. Justin Froese reached base four times, highlighted by a triple and a run scored. Comets were scheduled to take on Canadian Tire Cardinals on Tuesday, May 31 but it was postponed due to rain. Hopefully the next action for Rivers Comets is on Wednesday, June 8 when they face Joe Beeverz Young Guns at 7 p.m. at Sumner field. Following that game, Comets will see action on Friday, June 10 when they are up against Brandon Marlins, 7 p.m. at Andrews Field.
