As interest in volleyball continues to spike across  Westman, young athletes from across the region have gathered in Neepawa this week for the Dig It Westman Volleyball Camp.

The event, co-organized by Amy Spring and Drew Korman, is being held at the NACI gymnasium from Aug. 22 to 26. Spring said this is the inaugural version of the camp, which is hoping to fill the void that was left behind by the now defunct Beautiful Plains Extreme Volleyball Camp.

“This is the first year for the Dig It Westman Camp. It’s stepped up to replace the Extreme Volleyball program, which ran here for 10 years. Extreme really helped to establish volleyball in Neepawa and across the region,” said Spring. “We’re hoping that our camp will be able to continue to build on that foundation that was previously here.”

Spring added that the primary goal of the camp is to allow youth volleyball players the opportunity to hone their skills with the help of some top level instructional talent.

“As part of the camp, we’ll break down more than just the fundamentals of the game. It’s going to focus on really good technique and other key areas of the game,” Spring explained. “We’ll have former university athlete Alicia Perry assisting during the first few days, providing her insight. We also have Atira Clunis, who was apart of the University of Winnipeg program and will be a part of the camp later in the week. Both of them will be able to share some of their technical knowledge with the local players, helping to improve their skills and conditioning and keep them to bring their game to the next level.

The inaugural Dig It Westman Volleyball Camp will feature a total of 40 participants from Neepawa and the surrounding region. Spring hopes that they’ll be able to continue to build off these already healthy participation numbers for several years to come.
