STARS Air ambulance had a busy month of February. The air ambulance responded to 49 calls the entire month.

STARS Pilot, Dave Harris said thankfully, the weather was pretty reasonable throughout February, therefore was not a factor in the number of calls they could respond to.

During the month of February, Harris says of the 49 calls they responded to, 9 were in the south central region.  He noted many of the total calls were inter-facility transfers.

With spring now here, Harris says the possibility of flood related emergencies is on their minds. He said with the possibility of road closures, that's a place STARS can be very useful. In the meantime, they are staying in service and are ready to respond.

Meanwhile, Harris said the recently opened heli-pad atop the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg has created a whole new perspective on his work.  He said the pad allows him to now experience the entire chain of survival in action.

Harris says in his opinion, there is no better job than what he does.  He says there is such a feeling of purpose, being able to be there for a person on what's probably the worst day of their life.
