The Municipality of Grassland wants Sunrise Credit Union to reverse its decision to close the Minto Branch of the Credit Union at the end of September.

The credit union has been opening the Minto Branch one day per week to meet the needs of customers in and around Minto. Customers were told in later summer that the doors would close at the end of September.

“We were surprised just like the members were shocked when we got the letter” said Reeve Blair Woods.

The municipality feels the closure goes against the credit union’s own policy and what’s really frustrating is they have a branch in a town the same size as Minto and we just couldn’t see where the credit union was coming from.”

The branch being referred to is in Laurier and that was inherited by Sunrise through a merger.

In a letter to Sunrise Credit Union the municipality pointed out Minto has noticed residential growth over the past nine years of 25 per cent. Grassland points out the closure of the Minto Branch will not only negatively impact the municipal office but also the school, Co-op, daycare and Community Market.

“At our office in Minto our chief financial officer looks out her window and the day the bank is open there’s a lot of people going in and out of there.”
