ADVANCED RELAXATION TECHNIQUES

 

Learn how to relax your mind and body using diaphragmatic breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and visualization. Techniques are taught over three sessions. Call 578-4190 for more info.

 

 

 

CHRONIC PAIN CLASSES

 

Available to anyone living with chronic pain.

 

Learn how to:

 

·         reduce pain with mind-body techniques

 

·         decrease discomfort, depression and distress

 

·         be more active with less pain

 

·         use medication wisely

 

·         and enjoy life again

 

Classes run for nine-weeks. Call 578-2198 to register.

 

 

 

COMMON CAUSE FOR MENTAL HEALTH

 

 A group of individuals with mental illness experience working together with health and service providers, to offer hope, advocacy, support and diminish stigma in the community.

A free program for people living with any kind of ongoing health problem. Each of the six weekly sessions will help people learn to manage their condition better and cope with the challenges that health problems create in their lives. For more info or to register

HEALTH AND SAFETY INFORMATION FOR SENIORS

 

Sessions provide seniors with home & safety tips. There is no charge, please register by calling Gail at 578-4565.

 

 

 

HEALTHY BEGINNINGS (A HEALTHY BABY PROGRAM)

 

Tuesdays at Central United Church, 327-8th Street.   Alternating between one week for pregnant women and their support person and the next week for parents of babies birth to one year.  Child care is available for preschool children.  Free milk coupons are available for pregnant women and moms with babies up to 6 months old.   For more info call Heather at 578-2545.

 

 

 

HEART PROGRAM EDUCATION

 

Have you been diagnosed with angina, had a heart attack, had an angiogram or heart surgery or heart failure?

 

Call 578-4204 or 578-4225 for information on these classes offered at BRHC

 

· Heart Disease, Chest Pain Management, Tests and Treatments class

 

· Heart Healthy Diet with registered dietitian

 

· Heart Disease and the Benefits of Exercise with physiotherapist

 

· Coping and Stress Management after a Heart Event with clinical psychologist

 

· Heart Disease Medications with pharmacist.

 

 Heart Program nurse is available at each class.

 

 

 

 

 

LOOK GOOD FEEL BETTER WORKSHOP

 

Helping women with cancer find support; gain confidence; lift spirits; take control.  Come and join us at a free two-hour Look Good Feel Better workshop and learn how to manage the appearance-related effects of cancer and its treatment. MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID CANADA TRAINING

 

 BASIC COURSE: 12-hour certified training program that teaches first aid skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or is experiencing a mental health crisis.

 

FOR ADULTS WHO INTERACT WITH YOUTH COURSE: 14-hour certified training program to teach first aid skills to adults so they can provide support to youth (ages 12-24) developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.

PEER SUPPORT GROUP FOR PERSONS WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER

 

Organized weekly support and educational sessions. Will recommence in the fall of 2010.

OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER (OCD) TREATMENT GROUP

 

This treatment group is an education and skills building group for individuals with OCD who

 

 live in Brandon and surrounding communities.  Offered annually and runs for 12 sessions.

MEN’S RESOURCE GROUP

 

This group is a process-oriented treatment/support group for men in the Brandon and surrounding communities who have been sexually abused as children. The purpose of the group is to provide emotional assistance, education, and support for group participants. It is offered every year to every two years, depending on expressed interest and/ or community need. The anticipated start date for the next group would be spring of 2011. PRENATAL CLASSES

QUIT 4 YOU PROGRAM

 

Available to people looking to reduce or quit smoking/using tobacco. One to one ccounselling, family ccounselling and resources are available free of charge. Phone 578-4207 for an appointment.

 

 

 

RESPIRATORY REHABILITATION CLASSES

 

A program for people living with COPD, Chronic Bronchitis, Emphysema, Pulmonary Fibrosis and other chronic lung conditions. Classes are free and run twice a week for 5 weeks. Call the Respiratory Clinician at 578-4203 or the clerk at 578-4201 for more information.

 

 

 

SEXUAL HEALTH INFORMATION & TESTING AVAILABLE DAILY

 

Teen clinic information, community sexual health clinics, sexual health education program, birth control options, emergency contraception, pregnancy testing and counselling, confidential STI testing, anonymous HIV testing site. THE SPEAKER'S BUREAU - Brandon & Area

 

 We want YOU to help us fight stigma by sharing your mental health recovery story and success. Workshops will be provided to participants to learn more about storytelling, public speaking, being a comedian, creative writing, art and film. Tell us what recovery means to you and decrease the stigma in our community. To get involved call Tracy at 578-2450.

 

 

 

TRIPLE P POSITIVE PARENTING PROGRAM AT THE CHILD AND ADOLESCENT TREATMENT CENTRE

 

An 8-week program for parents of children ages 2-12, offered at various times throughout the year. A three-session seminar series, including The Power of Positive Parenting, Raising Resilient Children, and Raising Confident, Competent Children, will also be offered throughout the year. ACTIVE PARENTING OF TEENS AT THE CHILD AND ADOLESCENT TREATMENT CENTRE

 

 A five week video-based, interactive learning experience for parents of pre-teens and teens.  Sessions include information on the Active Parent, Winning Cooperation, Responsibility and Discipline, and Drugs, Sexuality and Violence – Reducing the Risks.  Cost is $16.00 for the parent’s guide.  Courses will be offered at CATC at various times throughout the year.

7TH STREET HEALTH ACCESS CENTRE ~ #20 - 7TH STREET

 

  Bi-Polar Support Group - For individuals living with a type of bi-polar illness is held on a regular recurring basis at 7th Street Health Access Centre. This group provides mutual support, guidance, information, and guest speakers. It is an 8-week session that occurs on Tuesday evenings at 7 PM to 9 PM.  The sessions are scheduled throughout the year as the need and demand requires. Dual Recovery Anonymous Group – A self-help peer support group to help people recover from being affected by both an addiction and a mental health issue. Dual recovery, prevent relapse and carry the message of hope/recovery to others. Meet every Wednesday from

• Weight Management Classes - A series of 8 classes focusing on healthy eating, activity, motivation, and emotions. These weekly classes will have practical tips to assist with weight management.

 

• Stress Management - Do you have a lot of stress in your life? Attend this class and learn how to recognize what causes you stress and what techniques can help you manage your stress.

 

•  Learning about High Blood Pressure - What is it, what happens if it is left untreated, how to control it and much more!

 

•  Type 2 Diabetes - Learn about the effects of food, exercises, medications and stress on blood sugars; blood sugar testing; personal plans; live a healthier lifestyle and diabetes related health issues.

 

•  Label Reading Session –Gain practical experience at label reading with emphasis on sugar, fat and fibre content.
