It was a great day to see Brandon 'En Plein Air'

Posted by Adam in Local News, 2/24/2019

While a lot of us spent this cold day in the safety of indoors, a familiar face took advantage of weather that’s a sort of blessing in disguise with proper precautions.

As most folks probably know, Weiming Zhao has painted countless scenes around the area over the past more than 15 years. As a Plein Air artist, Weiming is at his best when he’s outdoors with his familiar easel and painting the subject right before him.

The pic attached to this post was taken this afternoon where the temperature reached a not-so-balmy minus 34 with the windchill as the local artist created not one but two new paintings. With this weather also comes plenty of sun, light and colour that Weiming describes as inviting and hard for a painter to ignore.

Working in this weather didn’t come without its share of obstacles as Zhao painted just outside of his home dressed in extra layers to help combat the cold. According to the post embedded below at one point paint started to freeze up and the wind produced a gust that knocked materials all over the ground… but persistence paid and the results speak for themselves!

As noted in a separate post this afternoon, Environment Canada has since issued an Extreme Cold Warning with temperatures expected to plummet further overnight to the point where we’re forecast to see a dangerous -43 windchill reading at wakeup on Monday. At the temps we're forecast to see where skin can freeze in minutes, one is advised to "Watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes." More on the warning can be seen in this post.
