Yesterday as you might’ve read about in this section was the PhysioFirst FoodFirst Drive in support of Samaritan House. Plastic bags had been distributed throughout the community and residents asked to place non-perishable food items in them and leave all on their doorstep for collection as a donation that would be directed to Samaritan House’s food bank.
Organizers today provided an update on what has been described as an “absolutely phenomenal day.”
As if on queue, a weekend of on-again, off-again rain gave just the right-sized gap of fair weather for organizers to conduct this year’s collections. Starting at 10:30 and until about 2:30pm 27 teams of volunteers from the Lions Club and Neelin High School blitzed the city to locate and collect donations.
I’m told today that a record 11,000 pounds of food ended up being received, weighed and sorted yesterday with the expectation that a few more pounds will be collected in the coming days. To put that further into perspective, earlier this week organizers shared that over 14 years of doing the drive they had totalled 90,000 pounds.
All donations end up being distributed locally by Samaritan House to those in need in the community. Three ecstatic cheers to anyone that took the chance to contribute and to everyone that had a part in organizing… it’s great to see a community coming together with this level of enthusiasm to help when and where it’s needed!
