As one Brandon school builds towards its 1st year in 2020, another is this week reflecting on a rich tradition in celebrating a significant milestone.
Meadows School first opened in June of 1969, making this month the 50th Anniversary for the K-8 school.
In five decades the school has played a major role in educating many thousands of local students, including 490 this year compared to 413 in its inaugural year and I'm told 400+ for all years in between. Over its lifetime it has seen just six principals, most recently Dave Lim in the role since 2014.
In conjunction with the 50th, a time capsule has been opened that was put together in 1994 as part of 25th anniversary celebrations at the time. Staff showed me today a fun note written by a student in 1994, who predicted that in 2019 there will be electric powered flying cars and also expressed a hope that their children will be able to one day go to Meadows. One out of two isn’t bad as their children 25 years later do in fact find themselves students within the same walls!
The school has in recent years been the recipient of an addition, a South wing that added three new classrooms, a grooming room and elevator. 2012 saw the construction of a new playground. School staff tell me that it was originally opened as an “experimental” open-concept building, with a 1980s renovation re-structuring it into the more distinctly separate classrooms that are seen today.
As part of celebrations, on Tuesday (June 4) anyone that has or has had a past connection to Meadows is invited to attend assemblies that are taking place at 10:45am and 1:30pm, a BBQ from 11:30am - 1pm and school tours between 9:30-10:45am and 2:15-3:30pm.
