Slightly delayed berry season looks worth wait at Grand Valley Strawberries

Posted by Adam in Gardening, 6/26/2019

The cooler weather to-date this growing season will cause a slight delay in a popular area summer pastime, but early signs are it will be worth the wait.

Grand Valley Strawberries tells me they are hopeful for a possible start to the season at their Pick-Your-Own farm toward the end of the first week of July. In recent years berries were ready for picking for the end of June, though with blossoms still visibly a-plenty this morning time will still be needed for pollinators to continue their work and for the ensuing crop to mature. It’s that level of bloom that has farm operators George and Barb Neudorf optimistic at the potential for a nice 2019 crop.

Price this year will be $13 per 4L pail with picking generally lasting about three weeks after started.

This year will see two locations in-use at varying times, one at the top of the hill as in recent years along with the return of their original riverside location for the first time since 2014. The hill had been the sole location for the past several years. Both sites are located just East of the city along Highway 457/Veteran’s Way. When picking season has started signage will be posted directing to the correct spot depending on which of the two is in-use for that day. That info will also be available ahead of time at grandvalleystrawberries.ca, their Facebook page as well as their phone recording at 204.728.8453.
