Brandon passes Winnipeg in per capita recycling

Posted by Adam in Local News, 6/29/2019

Brandonites recycled an average of 78 kilograms per capita of packaging and printed paper in 2018 according to data from a report released recently by Multi-Material Stewardship Manitoba. That’s a nominal increase of 2% over 2017, though just enough to come in ahead of the Provincial capital’s 76.6 kg.

Amongst cities in the province, both have a way to go however to match the example set by Winkler’s 95.2 kg average.

Though the data isn’t specifically presented in the form of rankings, in the Southwest region the Wheat City’s average was the third highest out of 25 communities overall with Carberry leading the way at 88.6 kg per capita.

Brandon had tallied as high as 84.5kg in 2015. One should however probably take direct comparisons to that year with a grain of salt since the average is likely a touch on the high side with older 2011 census population data used in the calculation.

The report also includes data for post-secondary institutions, with Assiniboine Community College’s 101,770 kg of total materials recovered being less than only University of Manitoba’s reported amount. Brandon University recovered 37,470 kg.

Rankings aside, we’re all in this together. Across all participating municipalities and post-secondary institutions a grand total of more than 84 million kilograms was recycled last year. A recovery rate of 84.4% was reported for 2017 with 2018’s data still to come.

Multi-Material Stewardship Manitoba Inc. is a not-for-profit, industry-funded organization that funds and provides support for the province’s residential recycling programs for packaging and printed paper.
