With local cycling at its seasonal peak, Kiwanis Club of Brandon is preparing for the summer edition of their popular bike auction this coming weekend.
Up for grabs on Saturday will be a selection of just over 100 bikes ranging in size and condition from those suitable for young kids on up to adults. Bikes are purchased in a public auction format with each of the 100+ individually gone through one-by-one by a location auctioneer with each generally being awarded within a couple of minutes.
A rep of the local Kiwanis club tells me that generally speaking bikes sell for less than half of their their as-new value. That included their highest-ever sale last spring that saw a $900 racing bike go for over $300.
The auction had previously been a once-per-year event, though with a higher quantity being made available by Brandon Police Service and by donation the need for a second sale came about in recent years. This past spring saw about 130 bikes auctioned off.
Proceeds from the auction go to Kiwanis Club of Brandon, whose various endeavours include a focus on working with local youth. Most recently they spearheaded the construction of the new pavilion at Rideau Park in the Cityâs East End.
What you see in the photo attached to this post is a preview of a little less than half of what will be available. Auctioning will start on Saturday at 10am at the Keystone Curling Arena, with a chance to preview everything available an hour ahead of time at 9am.
