With 2018 coming to a close, I’d like to across two separate posts look back on the year through the lens of eBrandon and the discussion threads that data shows defined the year. Some on very tragic topics, some on less serious ones but all captured your attention during the calendar year as topics most important to you above all others.
Today I’ll look at the months of January through June with a few words on each topic along with a link to the discussion on that topic.
JANUARY
18th. Amidst much confusion, would-be patrons arrive at popular local restaurant Kam Lung to closed doors. Later in the year a second location for Kims Asian Restaurant would open in its place.

19th. Westman Communication Group’s title sponsorship of the Keystone Centre’s main arena comes to an end, soon to be replaced by Westoba Credit Union in the newly renamed “Westoba Place.”

FEBRUARY
6th. Westman is shocked and saddened by the passing of popular, larger-than-life News In a Minute operator Robert Ferguson.

8th. The infamous Kemnay bridge is struck by a truck, causing visible damage and sparking a discussion on the dangers of its setup and how similar accidents can be avoided in the future.

MARCH
1st. As the calendar turns to March, an Environment Canada weather statement foreshadows one of the bigger snow events you’ll see in Westman. All-told Brandon ended up receiving just under a foot of snow over a two day period

7th. A popular restaurant from Brandon’s past announces a return. Astoria Pizza would initially open on a delivery-only basis before also opening an eat-in dining room at its Park Ave location

APRIL
1st. After many months of very visible construction, chain restaurants Harveys/Swiss Chalet open at the Northeast corner of the Shoppers Mall parking lot

6th. Unthinkable tragedy strikes in Saskatchewan as the team bus of the Humboldt Broncos crashes, killing 16 and injuring 13.

30th. Generation Xers learn they’ll get a unique chance to reminisce with the announcement that Vanilla Ice would headline a June event in Brandon.

MAY
19th. A massive fire erupts in downtown Brandon, spreading to several buildings and putting Brandon in the national spotlight for its response
