Donations sought for winter storm evacuees currently housed in Brandon

Posted by Adam in Local News, 10/17/2019

While Brandon saw its share of disruption when this past weekend’s winter storm dropped about one foot of snow on the city, it paled into comparison to the much more severe impacts seen in points further East that have forced many Manitobans from their homes.

As a result approximately 6000 evacuees are being housed between Winnipeg, Brandon and Dauphin. According to a spokesperson for Red Cross Manitoba late this afternoon, though the majority of that number are being housed in Winnipeg evacuees primarily from communities in the Portage la Prairie area and are staying in local hotels in Brandon.

The Brandon arm of the Bear Clan Patrol is currently aiding local efforts in support of those evacuees and have put out a call for donations to serve needs of evacuees in our city. Presently that need covers shoes, socks and pajamas for all ages. Donations are not able to be dropped off directly at local hotels. For that reason if able to help it’s asked that the Bear Clan be contacted either by email at brandonbearclan (--at--) gmail.com, by Messenger through their Facebook or by phone at 204 729 0788 option 2.

According to Manitoba Hydro data, over 6000 in the province remain without power as of the time of this posting. Information on all current outages can be viewed on Manitoba Hydro's outages page at https://www.hydro.mb.ca/outages/.
