Skating Oval at Waterfall of Lights set to open on Friday

Posted by Adam in Recreation, 12/19/2019

One of Brandon’s favourite winter activities is set to return just in time for the holiday season, the City of Brandon shared via a PSA this afternoon.

Thanks to a stretch of weather conducive to creating a surface suitable for skating, the popular outdoor skating oval at the Manitoba Hydro Waterfall of Lights has been pronounced all-but-ready and will be open for its first skaters on Friday beginning at 4pm.

The City says that some areas of the oval remain under development and are marked appropriately with signage and barricades. A separate jam pail curling activity that debuted last year is expected to return in January.

The oval will be open daily between 11am and 11pm through to the end of winter, weather-permitting. Waterfall of Lights displays are also to remain lit to 11pm each night. The skating oval is located just West of the City of Brandon's Parks Complex on McGregor Avenue. Parking is available on each of McGregor and Hilton Avenues.

In case you needed more motivation to enjoy the outdoors this weekend, the currently forecast high temperatures are +1 and +3 on Saturday and Sunday respectively as per Environment and Climate Change Canada data at the time of this posting.

The opening comes just days after the area’s community centres began opening their own skating surfaces including Valleyview and West End this past weekend.
