The search is over for a Texas homicide suspect that had been the subject of a Canada-wide Immigration Warrant and multiple Manitoba RCMP notices during 2019 after reportedly crossing into Canada via the North Dakota/Manitoba border during the summer.
In a media release on Monday, Halifax Regional Police reported having apprehended Derek Cameron Whisenand in responding to an alleged shoplifting incident in the Bayers Lake area of Halifax, Nova Scotia:
In an initial July media release, RCMP stated that Whisenand was thought to have illegally entered into the province near Haskett, Manitoba during the week of June 24. Last month as part of continued efforts to locate the suspect it was shared that the last confirmed sighting of Whisenand was on June 26 at a Winnipeg restaurant.
With Whisenand in custody, Halifax Police have said that arrangements have been made for handover to appropriate federal authorities for next steps.
