Comic Shop's Grand Re-opening highlights new focus on literacy, education

Posted by Adam in Shopping, 2/3/2020

A downtown Brandon retail space celebrated a brand new re-purposing this past weekend as it endeavours to offer a unique new mix of product that the Southwestern Manitoba market is currently underserved in.

At a Grand Re-opening event on Saturday, Your Friendly Neighbourhood Comic Shop opened its doors to a wider selection of product that includes a new focus on education and literacy. That’s initially meant populating the store with expanded selection of graphic novels/trade paperbacks. While that includes offerings for adults, the store also now features a kids and education section including a “Creation Station” that serves as a cozy space for kids to learn and explore while mom and dad are shopping.

All-told the new expansion has resulted in about four times as much retail space as had previously been in use at the 9th street location.

The store hasn’t gotten away from its comic roots, with a wide selection of comics available for order and pickup via the shop’s online presence at https://comicshop.ninja

According to store manager Jill Elvers, also in the works is an expanded selection of used trade paperbacks along with a focus on promoting local art and artists.

Perhaps just as noteworthy, the shop is now open six days per week between 11am and 6pm. Previously it had been open only on Thursdays as part of offering pickup service for online orders.

Your Friendly Neighbourhood Comic Shop previously operated a retail space on Pacific Avenue with a focus on retail comics and toys prior to the transitioning of comic sales online. The new store is located at 122 9th Street.
