Riding Mountain National Park visitor centre is getting a makeover

Posted by Adam in Recreation, 2/5/2020

A key component of Riding Mountain National Park will soon be on the receiving end of a major makeover, Parks Canada shared in a Tuesday news bulletin

Beginning early this month the park’s visitor centre at Wasagaming is slated to be on the receiving end of significant updates including an exhibit renewal on themes described in the news bulletin as:

"Riding Mountain is Home – to the Anishinabe (Anishinabe Homeland), to forest and parkland ecosystems (Wilderness Home), to park residents (Home Away From Home), to generations of visitors (Historic Home), and Parks Canada protects and manages the ecosystems in the park to maintain and restore ecological integrity (Good Housekeeping)."

Updates will also include an updated Parks Canada store space, updated audio visual equipment, improvements to accessibility and the addition of inclusive washrooms, an updated reception area, roof work and the addition of geothermal heating and cooling.

The centre, which has not seen significant updates in more than 25 years, was closed in the fall to prepare for the anticipated work. The majority of construction is planned for the weeks ahead with the possibility of it extending into the Spring, weather-dependant. By the time all is said and done it'll give one more reason to look forward to summer at one of Westman's favourite escapes.

Work is funded through the Federal Infrastructure Investment program.

Last year saw significant upgrades to Wasagaming’s main parking lot, which was paved to include 275 parking spaces, electric vehicle charging stations and paved sidewalks connecting to Clear Lake Beach.

The Park began accepting camping reservations last month for the upcoming camping season.
