Pump prices on the rise at city stations?

Posted by Adam in Driving, 4/29/2020

A period of plummeting gas prices at Brandon stations may be seeing a form of trend reversal on Wednesday with some city stations now posting per-litre prices North of the 80 cent mark for regular gasoline.

Three local stations could be observed on Wednesday morning with posted prices between 80.6-80.9 cents/litre of regular gasoline and another as high as 85.9 cents/litre by the afternoon. It was unclear at the time of this posting if or when the increase would be adopted by other stations in the city, with the majority as of 4:30PM Wednesday continuing to charge at the rate of 73.6-73.9 that had become standard of late.

Prices in Manitoba as a whole have been on the rise according to data from price aggregator GasBuddy.com, which as of late Wednesday afternoon indicates an average increase of 2.9 cents/L in the province to a Manitoba average of 72.1 cents/L of regular gasoline.

In a wider context, should the price settle in the range of 80 cents it would remain as some of the cheapest gas in Brandon in recent memory. As recently as early March, local drivers paid as much as 107.9/L to top up before the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic rocked global oil demand and sent prices plummeting.

The price of oil continues to be at extreme lows, with a barrel of Western Texas Intermediate ending the trading day at $15.06 on Wednesday for June delivery. That value however represents an increase of more than 20% over yesterday’s amount.
