Finishing touches underway on 1st Street bridge project

Posted by Adam in Driving, 6/19/2020

Crews have returned to the site of Brandon’s 1st Street bridge replacement project this month to check some of the final boxes on the project that will ultimately lead to completion of the 4-lane, 2-span addition for local motorists and pedestrians.

Efforts on the Province of Manitoba endeavour have been focused this Spring on median work on 1st Street as well as grading, concrete curbing and sidewalks on Pacific Avenue as part of the planned connection of Pacific to 1st Street. The connection sees a curving of Pacific from 2nd street in order to allow an intersection with North and Southbound traffic on 1st.

Some temporary slowing of traffic has resulted for Southbound drivers on 1st Street with the roadway having been temporarily reduced to one lane alongside work taking place.

A spokesperson for the Province has advised that paving work on Pacific as well as median work will be completed in early July.

Construction on the spans had begun in late 2015, with decks being opened to drivers by late 2017. Work returned to the site last fall in the form of waterproofing and paving of the decks. The Pacific Avenue connection presently being completed had originally been intended to be in place last fall but had to be delayed as a result of the excessive rain experienced in the area over that time.

With the completion stamp on 1st street, local focus is bound to turn to the planned replacement of the Daly Overpass with two new spans. At last word that project was scheduled to begin in the Spring of 2021.
