Dueling vendors bring Latin America-inspired eats to city streets

Posted by Adam in Dining, 7/23/2020

If you happen to like the smells and tastes of Latin American cuisine, the closest thing to your happy place this summer might just be Brandon’s South End where not one but two separate mobile food vendors within a less than six block radius will be at varying times serving up their own unique take on dishes primarily inspired by the region.

Debuting in time for supper on Thursday from a location in the Canadian Tire parking lot will be Mexican King. Operated by the folks behind Sabor Latino Restaurant, the truck will be serving from an assortment of Mexican street food that includes tacos, nachos, burritos, quesadillas, flautas and pulled pork fries. Regular hours will be Monday to Saturday, 11am-8pm and Sunday from 12-5pm. According to a social media post, Thursday’s opening day will see a later opening at 5pm in time for supper.

Just a handful of blocks away, local vendor Los Brothers Street Food has returned for its sophomore year in offering varieties of tacos, tortas (sandwiches), hot dogs and nachos from space at 13th Street and Richmond Avenue. Los Brothers was a new offering to Brandon last year and in 2020 have been found on varying days at the 13th and Richmond location this month. Only expected to be setup until 5pm on Thursday, for anyone that happens to miss them the truck intends to be open weekly from the same location with details to be shared on the their social media as confirmed.

In a year devoid of most of the kinds of events that food trucks would travel to to ply their trade, its turned out to be a sort of summer of local food trucks with each of Poutine King (Precision Toyota parking lot), Willey’s Grub Hub (Just4Kidz parking lot), Smoked and Sauced (Riverbank Discovery Centre) and The Batchery (Riverbank Discovery Centre) regularly setting up at varying locations within the city. Please check with the social media offerings of each for most current location.

Brandon is no stranger to being spoiled by mobile food vendors, with each of the Ribfest and Food Truck Warz events having brought a variety of offerings to the city on respective weekends for the past three years. Sadly as a result of the current pandemic realty, Ribfest will not be held this year. The status of a potential 2020 edition of Food Truck Warz was not yet known following last year's successful move to the Riverbank Discovery Centre that saw 26 vendors accompanied by a midway.
