    Just wanted to let everyone know there is a scam from telephone number 1-204-289-7341 which was received in a text message as follows:  
    Hi, Your Manitoba Hydro bill is due, please arrange for payment. Thank you, Manitoba Hydro. Reference # 6580654 (no SMS reply).  
     
    We just paid our Hydro bill so obviously it's a scam.  
     
    Just thought you should be aware.

    That is not a scam, if you google that phone number it comes up Manitoba hydro. off of twitter Have you seen this text? It's not a scam—it's from our credit department. Texts come from 1 of 2 numbers: (204) 289-7341 or (204) 289-7242.

    When in doubt call customer service.  
     
    I was getting scam type messages on my phone but it was actually hydro looking to change out my meter.

    You might not have remembered giving them your cell number. I didn't know they had mine. But when they were verifying my info one time they asked if my cell number (then said the number) and my husbands were still the same numbers we use. I would call hydro directly and ask them about the text and if they have your cell number. You may have just paid your bill and are current now, but maybe they didn't receive it before they text you? Online, phone, etc pymts can take a few days to process.  
    When in question I would call the office. But I'm not sure it is a scam.

    Because they actually want to make an appointment, from what I understand. I keep getting phone calls that they want to change my gas meter and that I should phone them to set up an appointment.  
     
    They will need to access your house to make sure your pilots are lit etc so you need to be home for the change-out to happen.

    Do you follow the news at all Brenda?? Hydro is in debt 13 billion and that is expected to balloon to 25 billion in the next few years. They are reducing their workforce by hundreds.  
     
    I would prefer if they tried to be fiscally responsible and not just driving around checking to see if people are home.  
     
    I have no idea if its a scam but if you are unsure a quick phone call to their office would give you your answer.

    I think they need to make an appointment for your gas meter, but your electric meter they can just come and do it even if no one is home

    the message has no link to click on, no demand for money via credit card by calling a number-nothing to indicate a scam. It is a simple text reminding that payment is due-and yes, often these reminders are set to send before payment is made and then they send even if payment was made within the last 24 to 48 hours.

    I wish they would text me to remind me to read my meter! Usually remember the day after. This doesn't sound like a scam, they didn't ask for money to be sent anywhere else buy to Hydro. Maybe they realized it's time to start doing things a little more efficiently as they are pretty much broke. This is cheaper than mailing out a reminder.

    From what I understand, it's an attempt at moving away from paper billing and toward online payments. In other words, another push toward a "cashless society". Not for me. I will be one of the last hold outs. I haven't used the self check-outs since they stopped accepting cash and don't ever intend to again and I won't be using this either.

    Although I don't know if I ever get a txt message, I do get emails from Mb hydro reminding me of my payments due. Also reminders to read my meter.

    About a month ago, I had my meter changed. They need someone home, so they can come in and ensure everything is working fine when they are done. They called and set up an appointment.

    You can sign up online, and set them to sent reminders. I have mine sent via e-mail, but expect you can get a text instead.
