Giddyup, I don't think that all the planning that went into the 'what ifs' for the H1N1 pandemic was 'for nothing'. Although the H1N1's mortality rate was much lower than Covid-19, many of the same principles were used when pandemic planning for Ebola and now for Covid.

I think you misunderstood what I said, I meant for what I had to do for my licensed daycare was extreme, repetitive , time consuming and overkill. It was provincial nonsense. We already are required to have a written health and disaster plans in place... which are shared with all child care families along with an extensive policy and procedure manual. There was a plan for if I got sick, if my kids got sick or if the daycare children got sick. Hand washing and hygiene and extensive toy washing policies were already in place. Spending hours and hours developing, writing and distributing more of the same wasn’t the best use of my time when I should’ve been spending that time planning daycare lessons and activities and actually caring for the children.

Does anyone else find it ironic that all school staff will still be going to work? Say 1 person on staff gets it and then they spread it to the rest of the staff and then everyone there has to be quarantined for additional time. Does this not defeat the whole purpose? I am sure they can work from home. Everyone is going to be madly cleaning the schools, which is great and needed, but the virus only lasts for up to 3 days on surfaces. If the building is closed completely then there is no worry about getting it upon return. However, if a staff member gets it and continues to go to work and get everyone else sick, then the virus continues to spread.

.....because teachers as adults have an understanding of how the virus is spread and are aware of the methods to mitigate the chances of spreading the virus. That is not to say the children are incapable of the same just more unlikely because they are not as experienced / mature.

This is not a cause for concern.

Also, the point of social distancing is not to prevent people from getting Covid 19, it is to help prevent them all from getting it now and overwhelming the existing medical resources. To "flatten the curve as they say.

We all have to be ready to be in this situation for the long haul.

Everyone is still going to work at the moment. Grocery store employees, pharmacy, dentists, healthcare, gas stations, etc, etc etc. Why shouldn’t teachers?
They are eliminating the students due to numbers, and social limiting. This isn’t because it’s in the schools, it’s to stop the spread. So if all teachers need to stay home to make sure they don’t get it from other staff, they also won’t go to a store, get groceries, gas, etc? They will 100% self quarantine for these 3 weeks? Cause they could pick it up more from those places, than being around a handful of staff members. Just my opinion.

As of now the government says daycares will stay open, including ones located in schools.

Though after watching the press conference today, when asked about daycares staying open, the minister of health said more info would be coming, this makes it sound like they may be closing as well.

Some pretty unbelievable stories out there today re shopping in the city. Superstore earlier this morning I gather had a lineup at the tils that stretched all the way to frozen food, down the length of frozen food all the way back to seafood.

Health Links is a 24/7 service: however, due to very high call volumes it's tough getting through despite them more than doubling staff and making service upgrades to handle the bigger volume.

My doctor is not sending her kids this week. That kinda opened my eyes up a bit.
How can we possibly get kids to socially distance themselves?
Teachers are being told to move desks as far apart as possible and limit close encounters with students. This is not possible in early years classrooms.
I don’t know what to do.

Mine are staying home. I understand the week was more of a period of time for parents to find child care who would be scrambling. My kids can easily keep up with school work which will take the load off of teachers and help with keeping distance between kids who parents have to send them.

So hubby went to get more masks yesterday as he wears them for work. Not one to be found. He needs them to safely do his job. This is very frustrating. We have yet to see anyone in Brandon wearing a mask so are people just stock piling them at home too.

I am sending mine. I work, I do not have the luxury to be able to take 3 weeks off, without pay, to stay home with him. I have bills and a mortgage to pay.

I have been speaking with him daily regarding this issue and things to do to help prevent issues. But at the same time, I cannot teach him to live in fear of a virus that a ton of people have survived (but the media doesn't post about).

Hoping someone has some answers.

My partners parents both have Alzheimer’s. She is in a seniors home and he is in the hospital. I have an adult child with special needs who will not be leaving the house because she has a compromised immune system. His dad is getting very agitated because he has not seen his wife and does not understand what is going on.

Does anyone know if they will be locking down the care homes and the hospital against visitors? I found one article that says they do not advise visiting but that’s it.

To be honest... no one should be able to fly in or out of north america for atleast a month.

Im suprised canadian government has not done anything to this point for no travelling outside north america. This whole march break travelling to hot destinations is a high risk and should NOT be allowed!

It will only get worse once everyone returns from their trip.

Iceman, the reason the Canadian govt hasn't implemented a travel ban is because health officials don't actually recommend travel bans. A travel ban might delay the spread by a few days to a few weeks, but will not stop it. CBC article that explains:

Just a thought or two, presumably the stores are sterilizing carts/baskets after each customer use.
The shelf stackers and till folk should be wearing hand protection as the virus could be on the packages they pick up to scan. It can live 48 hours or more on surfaces.
If a contagious person has picked up a shelf item and put it back the virus could still be viable when the next customer selects that package.

Four confirmed cases in Manitoba, all in Winnipeg.

Three additional presumptive positive cases today. One in Winnipeg, one in Interlake as per CBC. Third not yet said.

There are no confirmed or presumptive positive cases stated as being in Brandon or the Westman region at this time.

Thank you to those that take the time to call out misinformation whether it’s on here, elsewhere online or in coffee shop talk. Some folks may come about it unintentionally, but whether it’s on here or on social media absolutely do not post “I heards” without linking right back to the province or reputable media. Spreading misinformation (even unintentionally) is serious enough at the best of times. We're all in this together and this is one area where current facts and a shared public understanding based on them are critical and those facts come from the province and reputable media sources.
If misinfo is on Facebook or Twitter, they have reporting tools as do I on here. Best not to assume that someone else has reported.

Vegemite, public health officials DO NOT recommend hand protection or masks for prevention. Proper hand washing (or proper use of hand sanitizer) is advised. Both for people stocking shelves, for example, as well as for shoppers after shopping and touching objects.

Also, it is not yet known how long the virus remains viable and infectious on surfaces - research is ongoing.

Yes, that is one study, there are many other studies going on right now too. That one says that "Our results indicate that aerosol and fomite transmission of HCoV-19 is plausible". There will be many more study results coming out in the future - which will give us much more information about the virus. Right now, hand protection (ie- gloves) is not recommended by health officials. No matter how long the virus can live on a surface, washing your hands properly will kill it if it gets on your skin. The virus can not enter through your skin.

Different provinces take on covid 19

I am reading from different provincial websites and all have different measures in place. Saskatchewan government has no measure's in place and the premier is talking provincial election. Alberta has a few measures in place but have not closed schools or any government offices. And, there is 2 cases of covid 19 in ICU. BC,Quebec ,Ontario have the strictest measures New Brunswick seems to have measures in place in Atlantic canada. Nova Scotia and Newfoundland have little if any measures in place. And, pei is now looking at measure's to contain the virus. The north is doing nothing.
The economy has tanked and who knows when it will come back. Who is going to pay? The citizen's of Canada. The only people who benefit from this crisis is toilet paper companies and health supply companies. Travel is reduced and oil companies will be the next to complain. I know a few companies in Brandon already cutting hours for employees. Banks and property owns need to make changes or postpone at least one month payments for working people affected by the covid 19 virus. Is the government going to help, they so but we all know what will happen. The economy of brandon is suffering just by canceling the winter fair, hotels are going to empty,restaurants are already slowing down,no place for kids to at least do something. You cannot ask a 3 year old to cut the lawn. This virus is affecting is not affecting big business but the workers. I hope someone out there is doing an impact survey. The numbers after this panic will be fudged. In conclusion, how can some provinces have no measures in place and others going overboard.
