A confirmed case of COVID-19 was in the school on Nov. 2 when the individual may have been infectious. Based on the public health investigation, this exposure was assessed to be low risk. At this time, all individuals who are considered close contacts have been identified at Elton Collegiate and are required to self-isolate. Anyone who was in the same classes is recommended to self-monitor for symptoms and seek testing if symptoms develop.

A confirmed case of COVID-19 was in the school on Oct. 29 when they may have been infectious. Based on the public health investigation, this exposure was assessed to be low risk. The infection was not believed to be acquired at school. At this time, no close contacts have been identified at the school. No one is required to self-isolate from this exposure. Anyone who is in the class is recommended to self-monitor for symptoms and seek testing if symptoms develop.

So, this was something that came up at the news conference this afternoon, and I had to do some digging because I didn't know what they were talking about. There was a question about an exposure at a work site in Brandon, and Newfoundland, and an advisory from the government of Newfoundland.

Here's what I found:

BUT, posted today, there's an article linking that NL case to potential outbreak at a worksite for Seymour Pacific Developments here in Brandon. https://www.brandonsun.com/local/nl-tells-returning-workers-to-self-isolate-573049121.html

I had to look up Seymour Pacific, and they're building the new Aspen Greens complex on Sycamore. https://www.seymourpacific.ca/copy-of-completed

Public Health has issued a statement saying it's still under investigation. But considering the implication if it's what it appears to be, I thought it would be prudent to post it here.

A confirmed case of COVID-19 was in the school and rode the bus on Nov. 4, 5 and 6 when they may have been infectious. Based on the public health investigation, this exposure was assessed to be low risk. The infection was not believed to be acquired at school. Close contacts connected to the case have been identified and advised to self-isolate. Anyone who is a close contact has received a close contact letter or phone call from public health.

Evidence of how easily the virus spreads and the fact that it's been very much present in the city this month in more than just the announced school cases and the small handful of exposures that've been announced. Via the link below, Wheat Kings' Ridly Greig tested positive on the 8th and has since been isolating at home in Alberta.

From the link, Greig believes he got it in connection with an ice time in Brandon that would've been before the shift to 'red' in this region. Refers to "about four or five other guys that got it from the ice time."

Good news is he's doing well and that the others he's referring to are said to have just mild symptoms:

Important to note that the Wheat Kings don't hold formal practices as a group at the moment and so the ice time Greig is referring to could've involved skaters from all walks and not necessarily Wheat Kings.

Also worth noting that the province has said that cases are reflected in a region's stats only if they have a health card in that region. This might technically count as an Alberta case even though he says in the article that he believes it was acquired here. Assume also the case with any out of province positives tied to the Seymour Pacific Developments outbreak that Abbysmum mentioned above.

Via the City of Brandon release, an employee within the Brandon Police by-law unit has tested positive for COVID.

“ The employee last worked on Wednesday, November 18th, 2020. The employee began to experience symptoms on Thursday, November 19th, 2020 and was tested on Friday, November 20th, 2020. The employee had some contact with the public on their last day of work and contact tracing is ongoing. ”

I should point out that notable by its absence in the JR Reid notice yesterday is the usual “not believed acquired in school” sentence, as noted in the Sun story: https://www.brandonsun.com/coronavirus/Confirmed-case-at-JR-Reid-School-573227741.html
Have to caution against making too many assumptions without more info but between that and the fact that the Nov 16 announced case was also Grade 4 there are questions worth learning answers to around the contact tracing in this instance.

Should be pointed out that they have said that the school has been deep cleaned and will be ready for staff on Monday and students when classes resume on Tuesday.

Question was asked at today's media briefing re the JR Reid cases and the absence of the "not believed acquired in the school" phrase in the most recent of the two. Dr. Roussin was not able to provide specifics, expressing general confidence in that there has been minimal transmission in schools.

As of now specifics on that particular potential exposure aren't listed on the Provincial exposures page with the notice being posted on the BSD page.

How can the case at VM be a student when it says the person was there every day Mon-Fri and the following Mon? And one of those days was a parent/teacher interview day so no classes. High school students only go to school every other day.

City is confirming a positive case in an employee of a BPS partner agency which shares office space in the BPS building. Last worked on Nov 20, no contact with the public. This is now the fourth announced case associated with BPS dating back to a first case that was announced in a by-law officer on Nov 23:

Maybe I’ve missed something somewhere but I haven’t seen a mention of it specifically being a student, just that it’s in the Grade 11 cohort?
