very disappointed with the announcement of not looking at extending to mental illnesses.  
 
don't get me wrong I don't agree for any mental illness as Suicide is part of many conditions.  
 
My concern is Alzheimer's. This is a terrible disease that takes a person to a terrible death. I watched my mother for a couple of years detoriate losing herself. And eventually people's minds lose the ability/memory of how to eat even.  
 
i sat with my mom for 7 days before she died.  
 
I would have not even considerate it as long as she had quality of life and was happy. Living in her childhood near the end mainly made her happy.  
 
It was the suffering at the end would be the point i would have wanted the option.  
 
Thankfully she stayed at home until the last few months than a few months at Assiniboine hospital floor. I avoided having to send her to a nursing home. All of which are prone to terrible care and abuse to elderly with dementia type illnesses.  
 
I am looking into future directive as I am terrified of suffering the same fate. But I heard maybe misunderstood that this would be illegal.

as I said mental illnesses as a whole I don't approve of. But there is to my mind one exception. And there is no disputing the diagnosis.

are so many variables involved with this exact topic. Such a deeply personal decision. It should be the individuals own choice (IMO), but not without consulting the family members left who would be the ones caring for us. Again, a very difficult decision.

I'm sorry for your loss. Alzheimer's and dementia are frustrating things for families to experience. We're going through this ourselves with a loved one. It's been years of grieving for someone who is still living. It's a weird place to exist.  
 
All the news reports I've read seem to indicate that while they are not expanding it to people solely for mental illness, they are looking at including advanced directives. The bill hasn't been introduced yet, but it sounds like details will be forthcoming in the next couple of weeks.
