I'm always looking out my front window, which I enjoy doing, watching different people going by and watching the kids playing, it's almost better than watching T.V. sometimes. My street is fairly busy most days, with Crocus High and several apartment buildings near-by.  
Practically everyday I see perhaps 30-40 teens from Crocus either standing around in groups and smaller kids all running and playing around. It was these particular groups that caught my attention. Upon occasion I've noticed, and that would include girls too, these kids spit on the ground. They would stomp their feet all the while hurling up a great big blob of spit to hurtle to the ground. I've noticed that it would be the same kid within the span of say 5 minutes, go through the whole process again. I'm, of course, referring to the older kids as well as the younger ones and the occasional grown-up who happens to be walking by or standing talking with a neighbour.  
It got me thinking about this phenomenon. I myself indulge in the upsurging of phlegm, but,I can honestly say, only in the mornings when getting ready for the day. My husband and my father ( God rest his soul ), are and were big spitters. Maybe not so much as when he was younger, but on occasion I've noticed my husband hurtle his spit to the ground yet. Honestly too, I got to admit that in our early years as husband and wife, I though it kinda macho in a strange sort of way, not so much today though.  
I also remember when they used to have spittoons in various establishments for this very purpose. And mostly it was the male species that would make use of them. I Often wondered too, how did they clean these spittoons or did they just throw them away?)Back then it was " incorrect " for a woman to spit. My mother( God rest her soul) on occasion would hurl her offending blob into a hankie as I recall.  
So what has reversed this role to enable both the male and the female to indulge in this phenomenon. It is really disheartening to see a little 5 year old girl hurl her spit to the ground and also a young teen girl.  
But then again it has been said that " We usually find what we are looking for " and this is especially true once we associate and mingle with the masses. And most assuredly, We do not have to look hard to find other people's weaknesses as we all have them. And to get by in this world we have to try and overlook some of these undesirable traits in people and focus more on what that person's positive aspects are rather than his undesirable traits. But speaking for myself, I don't think that I could ever accept this one undesirable, offending habit some people have of spitting on the ground, especially in public.  
A wise once said that " Life is not so short but that there is always time enough for courtesy." How True!!
