History of ketogenic diet is intended to help minimize seizure activity in epilepsy. That is why it is so restrictive. It may or may not work and it certainly not a 'diet' for the general population.
As always sticking to a healthy eating pattern with increased activity is what you need to stay healthy for your entire life. " |

for saying it.
My daughter has epilepsy. The keto diet is essentially the "last stop" of treatment prior to surgery, when anti-seizure medications fail.
Why? Because
1. it's difficult to maintain. You are severely limited to the foods you can eat, and your carbs are so closely monitored that even the carbs in your medication needs to be counted in your daily intake (and in some cases, consumes your entire daily allowance).
2. it can be dangerous, which is why it requires strict medical supervision. It requires the consult of nutritionists to design the diet, and many people actually live in hospital the first week or so of the diet to ensure they tolerate it well as it can cause a host of problems including tachycardia.
I find it incredible that people would use the keto diet for weight loss when there are other options out there.
