I am now sitting waiting for my date to have my abdominal hysterectomy with Dr. S. Although I know everyone experiences are different, looking for some feedback on your experiences. Was told today that they would give me an epidural for pain and have to give myself heperan injections at home for a bit. Anyone else?

was very good, the surgery went well , by second day I didn't need any pain medication at all (made me nauseaus) and was home on the 3rd day, I would recommend dr S because surgery and healing went well, I would say he is good at what he does

You can get it done in Winnipeg with out getting cut open !!! 2 week recovery instead of 6. It's the way too go

It would depend on the situation....my mom just had a hysterectomy and they didn't need to cut her open, and she had it done in Brandon.

As well with Dr. S, she was great! I also had an epideral for a day post surgery which went well. I was home in less than 3 days. No injections at home though. My only advice is to follow your post op instructions!!! I did too much too early and it was painful!! Also ended up having a hernia operation a few years later......connection? Idk!

I had oneba few years ago and having some muscle strength going in, helped my recovery alot.  
I never had to do shots either but ended up with a hematoma that required a 2nd surgery.  
If not getting cut is an option then for sure go that way, but its not for everyone.  
Like everyone else said- follow instructions and take it easy. Your body needs rest to recover

And there were 3 ladies in my room and 2 of us had the abdominal. I did not qualify for the laproscopic one and your Dr will tell you if you do because I think if you do they prefer that route?? I was in 5 days and had the epidural as well but no shots at home. I agree you must recover slowly, they say no vacuuming and for some reason?? no driving for 8 wks. And yes they told me that greater chance of fallen bladders and hernias after you have hysterectomy. They say not to lift heavy things afterwards but after a yr I was right back into that (we live on farm...always have and always will require heavy lifting but I think since had always done so I might be ok. Not sure but knock on wood none of the bad stuff has happened...lol) I looked online at site that forget the name, try googling hysterectomy sisters or something like that. It is forum for women who have had and it takes you through the various stages and recovery. I found it really helpful. I am so glad it was done. The recovery was slow but so worth it now!!

I just had a hysterectomy,but no incisions!! I recovered quickly, still no lifting though. I had it 4 weeks ago this Wednesday,best decision ever. Do not be afraid, they are doing it for a reason.I am in good shape and that really helped for a quick recovery. I was up walking stairs the next day!

Anyone had the ablation as opposed to the hysterectomy? What were the results and recovery time?

The first one was the 'rollerball' and that made things 200 times worse and I thought 'what have I done?' I was left thinking a hysterectomy was going to be my next option, then my doctor said Brandon were getting 'Novasure' on a trial and I could be put on the list for that one. Thinking I had nothing to lose, went on the waiting list. 6 months later I got the call and had it done. Bliss, no pain, no bleeding, no nothing. Certainly sorted my troubles, that's obviously not to say I may still need a hysterectomy as I also know women that had an ablation and then years later had a hysterectomy too, but I also know women that only needed the ablation, hopefully I fall into the latter. As for recovery, both times I was perfectly fine right after, went shopping after my second. I don't even recall any cramping and was certainly back to work the next day on both occasions. I would definitely recommend the ablation route if that is an option, but see if you can get the 'Novasure', not sure if it's still available in Brandon, but I did write to the BRHA telling them of my success and urging them to keep it.
