Yes, I know. It's not good for your hair. But, I can't afford to pay $150 every 6 weeks anymore. And I refuse to let my hair grow out with all my greys. So I've been thinking about boxed dyes.  
 
Are there any boxed hair dyes that are "higher end?" If so what are they, where can you get them?

You can get it at sallys for about 4 bucks a box. A bit more work but it works awesome

How the boxed dyes react on greys but I nearly always do my own. The odd time I will go and get a highlight as a treat, but you are right - 150 bucks every month or so is not sustainable for me.  
 
For my preference, I prefer Preference (LOL) by loreal. I find the Loreal products to be better conditioners and have deeper colours. Except Feria, which is more trendy and funky, I tried it a few times and did not like it.  
 
I have not been impressed by any of the Garnier lines, I find my hair feels rough and scaly afterwards. Plus they have scents that really bug me as I am sensitive to smells.

Nice and Easy hair coloring by Clairol - I do the complete coloring job for her and Nice and Easy is very good at covering greys - she's used this product about 3 times per year for several years and is never disappointed in the result - it's about $8 - $10 per box - I wouldn't call it "high end" but she definitely likes the result.

Does one box do your whole head of hair? And is it similar to the other boxes of hair dye that you would get at Walmart or a little more higher end?

I second Sally Beauty supply. Even my hair dresser grudgingly admits it is as close to salon products as you will get. I use the Argan Oil brand and it covers my stubborn greys really well. The most confusing thing for people the first time they go to the beauty supply store is that colour and developer are sold separately. Most box dyes have 20 volume developer and that is a safe one to get. So, get a bottle of 20 volume developer, a tube of colour, mix them according to the directions (for my colour it is 1 part colour 2 parts developer) and away you go. A big bottle of developer will last a long time, so every time you need a touch up, you just have to buy another tube or bottle of colour. Lots of savings.

After solid six years of dying my hair at the salon every 6-8 weeks, my hair started to crack. So, I figured I might as well try natural products. I went to the Two Farm Kids store and the stuff worked great. Lasts about 4 weeks. They don't have every shade in the store, but they will order it for you. The box costs about 12 bucks. Alternately, you can try henna from Lush, it works out to cost and last about the same. 4 months since my last salon dye job, my hair is starting to revive from all the chemicals.

I can't remember the name, but it is foam and all you do is shake it and if you have short hair it will do two applications. Most dyes, what you don't use you throw away, this one you can keep. It shows a gold bottle and foam on the box - love it.

What store did you get the foam dye from?

in the east end and I have seen it at Wal Mart and Superstore....can''''t remember the price. I will do a quick google and see if I can find it.
